I'm looking for a place to hang my hat around Devils Lake but my fishing experience has always been on the west side . I haven't fished much past the casino or stump lake so I'm wondering if the late summer/fall water gets ugly on Stump or if it's about the same quality as Devils Lake ? Also wondering if fishing on Stump is about the same as DL or comparable ? Thanks.

Maybe the east end has no fish flies  That would be a perk!

They're there too. They don't bother me too bad but I drove past some shore fishers and one guy was swatting at them with his hat like crazy.

Stump is also quite a bit more saline than DL, especially the western side of DL. Basically, fresh watch comes into DL from the north and west, then it slowly moves easterly as there's more evaporation on the east side than there is inflow of fresh water.

It’s gotten too salty for fish at times, if I recall correctly.

Yep, prior to DL connecting over to it there were basically no fish in it for years, other than stocked perch. As it rose, they eventually got the perch to do well and the others came with the connection to DL. Maybe their were a few pike and walleye stocked a little ahead of that, but you are correct in that it was very saline for many years.

Are they not letting water from DL out into the Red?

I’ve always had poor luck on East Devils / Stump. Weirdly enough the only ND Musky I’ve ever caught was a hammer handle from the north shore of Stump back in 2007.

I watched a few videos and read some but didn't learn a whole bunch other than Jason Mitchell mentioned that you fish it different than DL but then I watched a video he did and it looked like a normal setup to me. Tungsten jigs with wax worms.

I went there once and three men in make up and yoga pants asked to watch me piss on a rock. They were amazed.
