Guy in high school when asked what he was going to do for a living said " I am going to be a welder", I thought that was a strange occupation back in the mid 80's. I wonder if he ever became a welder, and if he is still welding.
I never welded, and as a little Minneapolis kid, none of my crew ever took any of them type classes either.
I was going to be a welder and go to NDSCS until I talked to my neighbor who was a certified pipe/boiler welder at the time and had been around for quite some time. Long story short he talked me into finding something with a cleaner work environment and if I enjoy welding and beings I had a decent nack for to do it as a hobby. Looking back and knowing things I know now about the industry I am thankful for that

Had Oxy-Ace since going to work at 18Yrs. old, Have a couple of Plasma cutters that work really good
Love my thermal dynamics cutmaster 100 once you have used one you will never go back to the torch, using a drag tip to cut sheets of 1/2 steel is the only way to go. If you need to take two pieces apart using a gouge tip to carefully remove the weld is much faster then using a torch or cut off wheel. My miller welder and plasma cutter are over 20 years old but they are still going strong. Did some braze welding with the oxy-ace back in my younger days to fix some broken cast iron but with the right set up you can mig weld just about any type of metel no matter the thickness, it just takes patience and a steady hand.

You sure can depending on the type of cast iron, i never did try welding pig iron. But a good quality cast iron can be welded with a mig.
