retirement -- and if you are going to india for some other procedure bring the dog have his done for a few hundred bucks along with open heart - get em both done for under 10k

tough decision. I just had a friend go through the same process. I am assuming the surgery will be less pain in the future. However the years from 7-14 just fly by. I have been very lucky with no hip issues on my dogs. They all seem to live for ever to long in fact.

Did a double TPLO on a large 5 year old lab several years ago. The dog did well his entire life but it was crucial that you follow the recovery instructions to a T for best success. It was done by Doctor Bettenhausen (sp?) in Bismarck. Expensive but the dog had a good life and di lots of hunting after the surgeries.

I hope Royce comes through ok. my wife's rott completely tore the lateral ligament loose and the miscues was gone. 1 week after reattaching the ligament with metal plate the dog get infection from the plate. now 12 weeks later and 400 dollars worth of antibiotics the dog has to go under the knife to remove the plate. if it isn't heeled and tears again we will have to put the dog down. I haven't even asked how much she has spent. try to keep a 120 dog from running or playing.

Royce got the Tightrope procedure yesterday morning in Jamestown. He's been doped out and miserable since. Will update you of his progress. On the order of $1300 BTW.

galwhofishes took an old adidas sweatshirt and made a counter-licking device. If he defeats it he'll get coned.

Did not know this was such a common thing until it happened to my Lab.. Did the tightrope and couple years later the other leg went... I wish I would have looked around because Casselton almost broke me on the first so I shied away from fixing the other leg... To be honest after the smoke cleared and the dog settled down he gets around great. with the exception of a huge knot on his knee?

Kong sells a ring that goes around the neck instead of the head cone that works for some.

Good luck #guywholoveshisdog! It's a tough decision when it comes down to dollars and cents on a dog you love, especially with no guarantees. I hope it works out well.....

Ahh, poor Royce. Having never met him, like others here, I wish him the best. Your descriptions of his shenanigans have made me smile.

He sounds like a dog with verve.

Just letting his leg touch the floor. Kind of a zombie all week from meds.

For first time ever he does not cooperate with getting meds jammed down his throat - so I bought an injector.

The Kong collar seems better than cone but he hasn’t been licking too much so no good testing yet.
