Fun fact: The last total eclipse was on February 26, 1979 ... the day I was born (yeah, it was a dark day, the day I was born)!! The next will be on August 21st. I'll be buying my first ever lotto ticket on that day.

That is also my birthday but I was 13 at the time. Let us out of school to watch it. I don't think they wanted to be responsible for some kid staring at the sun and burning his eyes out!

A buddy and I were crappie fishing during the annular eclipse in May of 1994, fish really started feeding as the eclipse reached peak and then died. We viewed by projecting the eclipse thru a vent hole in a ball cap onto our hand.

Meh, I seen the FULL eclipse in 79. I was a junior in high school. Not to excited about this one, as it will only cover 85% of the sun when viewed from here.

Because you can't really look directly at the sun on most days. Natural instincts to look away.

On solar eclipses though, the majority of the sun is blocked and your eyes may tolerate looking at it for enough time to allow the UV rays to cause damage. Kind of like a sunburn if something I read on the internet from an opthamologist is correct.

Its not... Its just easier during the eclipse, which allows you to do it longer which can hurt your eyes.

It's much more dangerous if you look at the developing eclipse through binoculars, telescope, or telephoto camera lens. Of course the last one can destroy the camera as well. I've photographed eclipses through welding glass, and it worked.
