I think if i was building a house i would try incorporate a gun room that also would be a fall out shelter and a storm shelter. Just cover it all in one shot. A little harder to add something like this when your place is already built.
My brother in-law on Jamestown built a new house maybe 10 years ago. The place doesn't have a basement, but there's a small storm room with foot thick concrete walls and ceiling all around.

Are them tornadoes or cold air funnels?

Myself and kids were at the Red River Valley fair maybe 20 yrs ago. And a storm was rolling in. We were standing in line for something and I looked up and seen 3 of them above us. There was one guy standing there. That seemed to know what he was talking about. And he is the person who made the comment on what they were. I told the kids let's get going. We headed for the pickup and it was getting darker and windy. About the time we got to the pickup the sky opened up and started to rain and hail. There were 100's of people running for there vehicles.

I was just falling asleep when the alarm went off on my phone. I thought it was another silver alert at first.

I emailed the pictures to KFYR and the meteorologist who emailed me back called them land spouts. Basically a tornado without the rotating updraft from a supercell. They said the rotation starts invisible and closer to the ground early in a thunderstorm, then when they get closer to the clouds and pull moisture in people can see them.
