Where do you think the line is with electronics?

The electronics on my boat are only good for one thing, depth, and its not very good at that even. I'd love to have the latest and greatest but I just don't get out enough unfortunately. Looking at the worth of my boat I'm going to say 10%-15% of the overall value would get me something decent to use.

I suppose the line for old dudes is different than young dudes. My line is closer to where it was when I started fishing. If I was just getting into it and finally making some decent coin, I doubt I would think twice about buying the best stuff I can afford and wouldn't worry about no stinkin line. Ask them 20 years from now and they might have a line. It's all about what you get used to.

what gets me the most is the guy that turns his nose up to long range hutning saying its cheating, not fair, anyone can pull the trigger blah blah blah but has $14,000 worth of electronics on his boat and can jig big females up in the fall in 40 ft of water like a video game. touch hypocritical IMO

I have helix's on my boat and although they are cool and the mapping is definitely great, i still have just as much or more fun jigging with a 20 year old Vexilar on the ice, or seeing trout pick a fly of the surface of a mountain stream.

I'm in the "ignorance is bliss" category. I kind of like not knowing what's down there. Every time I go over a spot and see a little hump on the bottom, I do what my grandpa always did with his ancient Eagle depth finder: "Get read, Tyler! There's a fish down there." Rarely did "calling his shot" result in a fish caught, but it sure got my heart thumping!

Anticipation, man. That's what fishing is always about! You just never know what's lurking down there. Or at least, you shouldn't. ;)

I am always leery that the fish are suckers, northerns, largemouth, white bass, etc.

See it on camera way too many times (boat fishing) - so I mark fish but don't get too wound up that I can (or want to) catch them.

holy pessimistic batman. i see a mark that is barely visible on the screen and i am usually certain its a potential state record. lol.

Depends on the body of water for me.

You still have to know how to use the stuff. I've been a fair adopter of new tech, but most of my best catches come without the use of it. Each thing has advantages and disadvantages. A good lake map and a good 2d sonar will catch you a lot of fish on any body of water if you are proficient with it.

I have yet to trust m electronics to just drive around and search for fish. But the mapping is a game changer for me.

i just kinda went through this... i'm outfitting a new boat and spent more than i ever have on electronics - $1500... that got me 2 - 9" entry level graphs, but the best i've ever had b4... i really wanted to go 12" at the helm for the si, but just wouldn't spend another $700 to go from 9 to 12... i've gotten used to being short 3" my whole life so i think i'll b fine...

I catch a lot of fish in places I can’t see any on sonar

pisses me off - how many fishable areas would I pass up if I trusted the “no fish here” that the graph is telling me?

I understand the technology and how to read

I suck at making optimal use of them

I need to go to sonar school maybe.

This winter, I said the same thing about buying crankbaits. I bet I have over 700 of them and if you would ask the wife, she would proclaim I have more. I promised myself no more. I told myself the fish are gonna bite on what I got or not at all. Fast forward to late April, and all the store ads are out with "exclusive" store brand colors. All the promises are right out the window and I am back to hiding new cranks in every nook and cranny where I hope the wife wont look. I finally realized I am like a squirrel that forgets where it hides its food. I'll look under the seat of the pickup and see a Scheels bag with about 4 cranks in it that I totally forgot about.

I think alot of those colors and lures are designed to catch more fisherman than fish.

I don’t have any electronics on the boat, just another thing to monkey with and I’m not tech savvy. I’ve got nothing against anyone that wants to use them, but I’ve been fishing the same lakes for years and have no problem catching fish using the lake maps and just remembering my spots. I would like to get a depth finder at some point though

shallow water specialists have little choice but to follow the gut I guess

maybe I became a shallow water freak because I didn't trust my electronics

Say what now?

One of the best fishing lure marketing tactics I've ever seen was reefrunner giving their cranks clever names. Monkey puke, cheap sunglasses, trailer trash, purple demon, etc....

Think I owe dirty Mike some drinks now that just exposed his evil master plan.
