I too am excited for the annual trip. On another thread I commented that I may not be able to go but things are looking good. Just sent in a fax request to get my Manitoba License mailed to me. Our group is going to be headed up on March 5th (Saturday through Tuesday) staying at the South Beach Casino travelling out by snowmobile from Brokenhead. This is the year to exceed that 13# fish!! For anyone up at the Casino while I am there, look for a black 2010 Black Lariat F150 pulling a snowmobile trailer with a white T570 AC and a black 99' AC ZL600 and come and say hi!! We'll swap stories!

We'll be up same time, same place, I'll hit you up.

We had an unforecasted ground blizzard 5-6 years ago up there. Not cool. I had the only GPS (crappy little Lowrance B/W H2O) and was tasked with leading a group of 10 or so off.

White knuckle city. :( A general poopy feeling until we made the launch.

Cant imagine the feeling out there we got caught in one down here a few years ago and it was high pucker factor if not for the gps and trail on the graph i think we would have been spending the night on oahe.

I use my iphone w/ navionics app up there and love it. Just wish it would mark my trails. Maybe it can and I just dont know how to use it...

We were in a ground blizzard on Red Lake a couple years ago. Couldn't see 2 feet in front of you, but could see blue sky overhead. Creepy feeling. Buddy I rode with had the wherewithal (despite several cocktails) to turn his truck around so it wasn't facing into the wind. Genius move, as anybody who didn't found an engine compartment completely stuffed with snow the next morning. As it was, his box was full, but at least the truck ran! Spent many, many hours in subzero temps trying to jump vehicles after that. Which, during a 5-alarm hangover and fighting frostbite, is hellish to say the least.

nobody's phone (or local towers) had that capability back then. One guy who had left our group had sketchy service where even voice was bad.

His belt blew. He had a kid with him. Set up his shelter and put kid in there. Worked like a dog to get new belt on - discovered he had wrong spare belt.

He voice called in his coordinates and, just as a few of us were ready to head out for him (darkness setting in - gulp) he called and said he managed to get it on anyway. He then thawed out in shelter, then packed up and headed in. We were relieved to see (and hear) him coming. His sled sounded like every bearing had gone out (belt was screaming horribly).

Yish!

Thanks for the update....I thing the sled will be coming with. I don't feel like shoveling if I don't have to. Plus, GPS on the sled is nice...

Big Windy is a lady you don't mess with. Bring enough supplies to last the night, mainly propane! I've been there with 25MPH winds that will turn visibility to zero in a heartbeat. I can't imagine what 40+ MPH will do out there. When you are 5-10 miles out, better have a good GPS to guide you back....throw in a few pressure ridges and things get hair pretty quickly. The last year or two when there hasn't been much snow, people forget how that lake can get nasty in a hurry.

Travel in groups, plenty of supplies and respect what the weather is doing. Snowmobiles for me, tracked vehicle if I had one and have never driven my truck out there....even when it is nice, the rough conditions will beat the bejeezus out of your truck...not worth it.

The good news is that it will keep some of the fisherman off that don't worship the walleye! Only the real prepared outdoorsman will be out now, I am good with that! Can't wait, just over 3 1/2 weeks to venture out on that beautiful lady, BIG WINDY!

Yeah I was watching it as well. Made our decision easy to track up our machines. You definitely have to be prepared and smart on that lake.
