Well this year had the any deer tag and hoping to get that big moss back mule deer. I have seen a few good ones out scouting this year so far so i was looking forward to it. Well saturday morning came and we were on the big hill about a mile out in a big walk in area. Seeing quite a few deer in the draws around and then my buddy with me said he saw a good one. I turned the spotting scope and found him he was along ways away but looked nice so we decided to start hiking our way over to him. Get to the hill we think he is just over sneak to the top and no where to be seen well he has followed the does over to the next draw over so we get to the closest spot now there are more does and more eyes and it there is no real good way to get closer. I range him at 587 not a breath of wind out so get real steady dial 13.5 moa. Now my buddy that is with me is questioning me on this he does not shoot much at all. So after explaining and some more talking he tells me if i shoot it in the ass i am on my own going after it. Now i take aim high shoulder and boom the 140 amax connects watch him crumple in the scope and he tells me holly sh!t he is down not one step is taken. Now we hike over to him and not the biggest muley in the world but my biggest and i am pumped.
Now the realization of how far back in sets in. So it is decided we need to quarter and cape him here and hump that big ol deer out. I have never done that before so doing it on the ground was a learning experience for me. Got it done and set out on the about 5 mile hike. Well i had my pack and game bags buddy did not want to bring his big pack so we tied two game bags together with each having a rear quarter and carried them over his shoulders. I took the head and cape both fronts quarters and backstraps and loins. I will say my eberlestock x1 was maxed out. I was also maxed out it took us both to get it on and off. Shot him at 8:45 back to the pick up at 3 pm.
This was one of the most fun hunts i have had. Alot of hard work but was everything i wanted out of this years west river deer season. A hunt like this makes me want to go out west to the big country even more and test my self out there. Now time to get after the white tails next weekend east river.
