I have a real good snowblower. A poulon pro. Think its about 4-5yrs old maybe. 27 in cut and 8 horse. I really blows well, throws snow 30-40ft easy. Runs like a top. Last winter it started to not want to go in reverse. It seemed it would kick in after a bit. Now this winter it won't. Took it in to local dealer where I got it. He thought it had a small oil leak which was falling down on the drive wheel causing it to slip. Well I got charged a $100 for the work. He tried to put a different seal in and a new wheel. In his shop it worked fine. I took it home quick and put in yard and left back to work. Came home later and nothing has changed. No reverse. He wants to put in new seals that actually come from this model but he has to order them. Im thinking something else now. Any thoughts? I'm mad cuz this is good unit. I should just sell it for whatever someone offers cuz I have a feeling he won't be able to fix.

Do you need reverse? I have a 27 inch Husqvarna and rarely use reverse. I just pull it backwards without using reverse gear about 95% of the time.

yeah I do that too but when you start getting older a reverse is nice. I live on edge of town. Get some pretty big drifts that I have to chop through. Pushing and pulling can get pretty strenuous. Work smarter not harder right?

Pulling one "back up" out of a ditch/slope sucks. I use reverse all the time. Key is the design of the control has to be very easy/quick to switch between reverse/forward.

doesn't MTD make almost all snowblowers now? Companies are just putting different jackets on them and calling them a diff name?

Sounds like your cable linkage for the drive needs to be adjusted, there is a procedure in the manual on how to adjust it. If forward works and reverse doesn't an oil leak is not the problem.

I agree with elkeater. the same belt runs forward and reverse so how is it you only have problems in reverse? My guess is that there is some kind of adjustment needed and I suggest finding a different mechanic as well.

thanks for help fellas. I will try to dig into it. I live in small town and really no where else to take it.

So mechanic said he adjusted belt but, if belt then forward would be off too. Thinks its friction on wheel or belt or drive plate. Not enough that, is due to leak making it slip in the area where reverse hooks in. Or drive cable needs to be tighten as far as it can go. Really nothing else. This mechanic is pretty solid by the way. Thanks giving ideas.

I have a polan pro 24". Double check that the drive is fully engaged. By that I mean down where there is the spring hooked to a lever double check that there is very little play. You may need to put the spring in a position to pick up some of the slack. I had to do it to mine because the slow yea s were acting like they were slipping. I moved the spring two holes tighter and I haven't had any problems since.

BigV, give this a try. Tip the blower up to set on the front of the blower housing. Take off bottom plate. While watching shift the lever in forward then reverse, the drive disc should move to the opposite side of the flywheel. If this does not happen the drive disc is hanging up on the slide of the hex shaft. Lube the hex shaft with light grease or oil ( do not get any on the flywheel ) where the drive wheel slides back and forth when you shift. The factory lube gets dry over the years. If this does not work the rubber disc is wore down to not make good contact with the flywheel on the reverse side. You will need to replace that rubber disc. Not that hard to do.
