Like all fixes, youtube works wonders. Just changed a broken auger gear on my snowblower. Easy to take apart, but putting back together was a bit different. Youtube vids and a print out of the parts sheet and where they all go was all I needed. Probably saved myself a couple hundred bucks. Try what Jake57 said.

I think Jake 57 nailed it. My JD was doing same thing. You can adjust to a point and after that , need to replace rubber disc

BigV, give this a try. Tip the blower up to set on the front of the blower housing. Take off bottom plate. While watching shift the lever in forward then reverse, the drive disc should move to the opposite side of the flywheel. If this does not happen the drive disc is hanging up on the slide of the hex shaft. Lube the hex shaft with light grease or oil ( do not get any on the flywheel ) where the drive wheel slides back and forth when you shift. The factory lube gets dry over the years. If this does not work the rubber disc is wore down to not make good contact with the flywheel on the reverse side. You will need to replace that rubber disc. Not that hard to do.

This happened to my john deere snowblower.
