i think its fine the way it is and fly carpin provided a good researched answer to why that is most likely the main reason. however, i completely disagree with those arguing against lycan's proposal based on it would be a PITA to remember when your license expires for for the GNF to have to check for 365 different dates. that's how our driver's licenses work. and they expire like every 5 years and most everyone remembers to renew on time and law enforcement doesn't struggle with enforcement. whether you are the license holder or the law enforcement officer, if you can't read a license and look at the "expires on:" date, you've got a problem.

Your driver's license always expires on your birthday. That's what helps in that scenario.

Our state drivers license is all electronic. The officer don't even look at the date. Just scan in there computer and all your info comes up including if it is current or if you are driving without renewal.

Seriously? You dont think an automated email reminding people when their license is going to expire would solve that?

Absolutely not. Do you know how many automated emails and other random emails people get in a day? People are getting numb to them. Between work and personal email I bet I get 25-50 a day.

Explain the situation where you think buying a license in January is a financial hurdle or unfair. The timing of it is all relative. You either fish or you don't. So paying a full price license in January for 3 months use should only be a one time occurrence. Because you will then buy a license in April with everyone else and you get your full year.

So a guy goes into the doctors office of a prostate exam, and the doctor says he is going to have to put his thumb in the guys ass to check it, well he proceeds to do the examination, and as he is putting his thumb in the guys ass, he puts one hand in front of the guy with his thumb up in the air, and then he puts his other hand in front of the guy with his thumb in the air, and says... surprise...

That's what you get for picking a doctor through Craigslist. Risky business...

I don't think you would understand the nightmare it would create for the game wardens when checking licenses. It's easier to have one single date to go off of and not 365 days that would need to be look at/evaluated at the time of checking. I guess if you don't mind waiting at the dock with 3 of your other buddies while the wardens do a quick check of what day you purchased yours and if it is still good. I for one would love for him to look see if it says 2017 and were done and off fishing.

bvious solution would be to have the regulations start jan 1? New year, possibly new rules, better check? Im really surprised so many people are against this idea... I think a big part of it is people just dont like change maybe.
Its not a nightmare for drivers licenses, why would it be for fishing? It would the expiration right on the license Im guessing, how hard is that for a warden to read? Also Johnr mentioned regulations, o

expires on the same date every year, wouldnt it be easier to have them expire exactly at the end of the year, instead of a few months in? So if you buy a 2017 license, its good for the entirety of that year?
Ok, so if you want to stay with the

They
start April 1st because that's when the new fishing season always started. That's also convenient for other licenses such as furbearer which wouldn't make sense to have to buy 2 licenses every winter. Deal with it.

You started the thread with the proposal of 12 months from date of purchase, so I responded to that. I think it would create all sorts of memory problems because each year it will expire on some random and different date.

I would agree, with ND not having a closed fishing season, that going with the start and end of the calendar year would be easier to remember for the fisherman. But there is also the management side of the fisheries and rules and regulations have to be approved or changed. If the work that goes into that cant be completed before the first of the calendar year then it probably makes sense to stick with April 1st as the start of each fishing season even though it never closes.

Bottom line is what's the problem you are trying to solve? I don't see any problem so what why fix something not broken.

Plus, I'm pretty sure the expiration of the fishing license coincides with hunting licenses. And since most hunting starts in the fall and ends in January sometime, and since we're kind of in the 'tween season right now with ice fishing and regular fishing, it makes sense the renewal is in March and not Jan. 1.

My 2 cents.

Well I don't think its fair that I have to buy a license for a year when I don't ice fish. Why cant we have 2 different fishing licenses, one for spring/summer/fall fishing and one for ice fishing. Way I figure, that would save me bout $7.98 or so per year and would be fair to me.

WTH? Evidently it is just fine to be able to vote without being alive or having an ID, what is this nonsense about needing a license to hunt/fish? ;:;popcorn
