When all conditions are favorable, the limiting factor is now carrying capacity of the habitat. It's pretty simple.

So what is holding you back? Can you operate a shovel or hoe, carry three gallons of spray/water on your back?

Dr. Bobkat bought some land southwest of Mandan years ago and spent every summer turning it into his dream habitat. Sweat equity. (I'd be willing to bet it's nice) And then he posted it....... No Hunting.

There are two Coverlocks parcels near me. One is 160 acres and leafy spurge from end to end. (Absentee landowners) The other is 640 acres with tree plantings in each corner. Solid wormwood. (open to hunting but not nice)

What kinda trees you putting in fritz, the deer have ate all our green ash back so they are bushes up here.

Two rows of Evergreens and I do like a tall tree shrub 50/50. I like green ash but worry about green ash borer. The Soil Conservation guys are not too concerned.

If we're gonna debate stools let's get our nomenclature straight right now.

Up nort here the pheasants need a bit more help to remain "sustainable". Some of us enjoy providing that help.

I guess I missed where I was complaining that more needed to be done to prop up the pheasant population. I'm speaking from a biological standpoint that is in direct correlation to any biome. The drought (less forage/water), haying crp because of the drought (less cover/habitat) equals poor reproduction success.

What little land my family owns, it is rented to another family member that farms. The tree rows are taken care of by him. I'd be lying if I say I hunt it more than once a year. It's posted by yours truly in the event that I don't go to SW ND with my neighbor or parents neighbor.

Now, I'll let you and your little, well rather large, buddy pat each other on the back.

Drought unquestionably hurts the bird popoulation. But in SD, habitat loss is the biggest issue. On our farm we went from 480 acres of CRP to 20. Couldn't get another contract. Birds numbers went way down. Extrapolate that across a county or state and it's easy to see. My in-laws ran a hunting operation in the south Central part of the state in prime pheasant country. Sameven thing down there and there is a fraction of the birds.

We are working on getting more of our land back into good habitat. With CRP contracts very hard to get, we are looking at other means. Income on an acre in our area is low so losing some isn't a huge deal. But with this Drought this year hunting will be tough for sure

There have been some new resources guys have been using up here and there is alot more cover in the last two years and i can tell a difference. With corn not worth any thing it seems the guys around here have found ways to make it more productive to plant back to grass and other cover crops vs the in put of planting corn

I'm curious as to how this years drought will affect next years crop prices. There's those years that you see an upswing in price for one crop, and then that's all you see planted. Sunflowers were pretty prominent for a couple of years around here. What I do know is that I hate walking for birds in uncut corn and flower fields.

Exactly.....however, I bought some land with CRP on it and tried to convert it to pasture. I sprayed and clipped since 2008 and all I had left was green needle grass and weeds. So I tore the fucker up.

Yes, BobKat did one hell of a job of turning that parcel into a wildlife mecca. Oddly, he did it while keeping the tillable land in crop production and the uplands in pasture by creating partnerships with local farmers and ranchers. And yes, while it was/is posted land and he is no longer associated with it, I know quite a few people who hunted it for turkeys, deer, pheasants, etc over the years he was associated with it. Actually, I am pretty damn sure there were more people hunting his operation than there were hunting the neighboring owner-operated farm and ranch lands (not including the few acres of PLOTS out there).

Just figured I would help clear that up for ya.

So are you actually "ignoring" me or was that little quip aimed at me? If it was, how would you know just how big a boy I am? ;)

There is a reason I added that Bobkat posted it. This same discussion happened on FBO and I poked Bobkat about posting it. Holy shit, everyone came out of the woodwork defending his right to do that because he worked his ass off. I concur.

Have a neighbor who (pick an excuse) raises a lot of weeds. He has the best pheasant hunting around.

mostly pain for every one but the person who just lets it go and does not care

You nailed it. The kosha weeds rolled with the wind and left seed on everyone else's property.

We lost 1.8 million acres crp and were scheduled to lose another what 400k next year. Wind, Snow rain hail yote- it all has an effect - but the loss of those acres has more impact then all the rest in my opinion. I am glad that i was alive during one of the best periods for rooty huntin. I remember the 70s --when i first starting hunting rootys -- it was tough going/its better now then it was then. On the flip side -- i have a Pheasant or two outside my camper in a field up by devils lake -- that sucker some how makes it through the winter and wakes me up every frickin morning.
