I am a tight ass but in my days of being a being a tight ass i have cost my self more trying to cut corners. Now i would buy the pre maid stove jack and have some one that knows how to sow put it in. My shelter starting on fire and burning down around me is not some thing i would look forward to.

We always bought ours too.
Also we always put the stove jacks on the ends never on the roof as we would put a plastic tarp over the top to help with rain and snow. Also had it plenty long so we had a lean on the side of the tent to throw our coolers, saddles, and anything else to keep it out of the elements.

I also thought about just using my big buddy heater instead of dealing with wood stove,, but am a little leary about carbon monoxide while sleeping... any thoughts on that?,, am i right to be nervous about that?

We used Big Buddy heater in ice house all the time. They have a cut-off if the oxygen get too low and we would just crack the window during the night as well. I am guessing your tent is not near as air tight as an ice house. I wouldn't be nervous using a big buddy heater.

my problem would be the condensation from the propane and not being able to dry out wet gear very good

I bought my stove jack from Montana Canvas. Propane will work in canvas tents, but you get condensation in that Realite that Cabela's uses. I run my Heater Buddy in my trailer. Not again. It went out because of low oxygen, but by that time don't expect to walk straight. I put a vented furnace in it now. The Heater Buddy episode was to close.

Glad you're still here to write about it PG. Heard that story from quite a few people and there is no way in heck would i be around an unvented heater. Not worth the risk involved.

Ok next question,, Have any of you guys re-waterproofed a canvas tent? if so what is the best product to use?.. Had someone tell me to use Thompson-waterproof sealer for a deck but that seems sketchy... any advice from previous experience is appreciated..

I've had great luck with this.

1.jpg

gallon size at Mills Fleet

it STINKS when first applied - don't do it in enclosed space unless you need to kill cockroaches at same time

my success was with ice fishing popups and mostly their skirts - not tents by the way

- - - Updated - - -

respect anything made of waterproofers (PTFE)

wear gloves and a mask when spraying this stuff from a cheap pump-up sprayer or spray bottle - once dried it's less of a risk but don't roll around on it for fun

once this crap gets in your body you are stuck with it - literally - and science is arguing right now about what this means for health in the long term

fire extinguisher foaming systems are made of this same "teflon" chemical family and now they are finding gigantic plumes of it in the groundwater under every place the foam was used for accident, training, etc.

the military is now spending BILLIONS just to find out how badly this stuff effed up the groundwater

now you know
