WTH!! Sudu Wok was open 2 months and closed. They built a brand new place for it on south Broadway. Heard these places are closing in the mall, Taco Johns, Hallmark, Coldstone. Dakota Inn on the bypass west of town, Valhalla restaurant on north hill in the old Vegas Motel, they opened August 24th. Staples by Menards. Also heard that 3 other motels are in the foreclosure process.

I wish I had something positive to say but I don't. I think we are heading for some tough times.

Yup, And oil was under $ 20 BBL . I was reading some legislature news and had to chuckle when some budget writer said we will keep a close eye on oil prices but they acknowledged their unpredictability..... I think they are Finally pulling their heads out of their asses. Article went on to say about project prairie dog or some name like that, It's about spreading the oil money across the whole state. The way I took it , You guys out west will fix the shitty roads in the RR valley .

We are all going to be millionaires they said , My property taxes have doubled since the Bakken shale oil boom.

Eye, Are you seeing some of the same in Willie town ? Are there still apartment complexes sitting empty or did they eventually fill them all up ?

Sorry to say it but I’ve never been a fan of Minot. Been there a dozen or so times and never could see the appeal.
Always wondered why the ND state fair was located there. Just seems out of the way.

Minot overbuilt. Hotels, apartments and homes out the ass. It was stupid. the city has several homes built, almost finished, now they sit from years ago on N hill. Went to the bank. Screwed up the housing market, then the stupid tax increases.. I sold this summer a house which was totally flooded and I rebuilt. Got out of it without loosing all of my ass somehow. Minot has some good things about it, good people here, but will never buy a home there agin

Staples is closing because the property owner has different plans for the building and wouldn't renew the lease. That store does very well actually. My wife's the manager and has worked there for 20 years. It came as a shock to us, we just found out a week ago.

Sudowok was pretty unimpressive so that is not surprising. I knew when they closed to expand their kitchen it was not going to last as interest is high in the beginning. Minot is a town living in the past and until they starting thinking like the big 3 towns in ND the rent prices will not be worth sustaining in this town.

Eye put it best, tax them to death. The mall is a lost cause. The rent is pushing people out. Scheels, Penny's, and Target is about all that is left. Now they start with this "keep it local" crap. Most people are tired of the taxes and are moving.

I opened my business 3 years ago October. The rent from my office is so dang high that it makes up 25% of our entire operating budget. Businesses are closing left and right this year. I love what I do and thankfully we are doing well, but I know of LOTS who are not. I don't even want to get started on property taxes.

Williston seemed to fill back up nicely. After staying there for work a few days it really isn’t that bad in Williston. Huge improvement from 2011 when I had to travel there everyday. The thing about Minot is it’s still an hour from the core of the Bakken and because Watford and Williston are not so overrun anymore companies are moving closer to the core and not locating in Minot again. Granted some companies can’t recruit families to live out west so they have offices in Minot.

Never been to Kulm before so I guess I can’t see the appeal of that metropolis either! Jk

Minot is better than any town in ND other than Bismarck, Fargo or Grand Forks. My wife grew up in a small town and all there was to do there was drink. Minot has things to keep a family occupied and not too big that we see the crime of little Minneapolis. The variety of hunting and fishing opportunities surrounding Minot is one of the best assets of the town unless you talk to my wife......

Nothing against Minot and I hope they do well but I am glad to see Williston and the west come out on the long end of the stick. When it was on fire I had many a long visit with my old bit salesman from Williston and we used to talk about the days when they cut up new rigs and sold them for scrap iron , It was one of those things you can ever un-see and you just know history will repeat itself but in all the excitement........ well you know the rest of the story. He calls it feathers and steak and I call it chokecherries and venison Looking at the big picture , I'll predict It will take a war or some serious tension to bring oil prices way back up to where they were again. It could be tomorrow or it might be 10 years from now and once again the strongest early bird will get the worm.

I would like to see Scheels take over the Sears space or the Herbergers space in the mall.

Apartment occupancy has gone way up in Willy and rent is skyrocketing again. I think new business’s have been stagnant here waiting for new airport to open and they develope the area where old airport is. That’s the only good area to put new business’s. Another thing that’s kicking Minot ass is the Canadian exchange rate. I can’t imagine as many Canucks coming down at $1.36 exchange

Amazon, and other online retailers have destroyed Main Street, and of course locals feel the need to travel to a destination shopping experience. It’s so neat to go to Minneapolis and spend a weekend supporting their economy.
As far as living in a town outside of “the big three”, most of us chose that, I hailed from the “great almighty “ Fargo, choosing to raise my family, and live a life in this community. To each their own, but don’t for a minute think those of us living where we do for any reason are less North Dakota, or small town bumpkins.
Each community has its own draw, mine is in the west.

I don't know what is going on in Grand Forks either. First we lost Macy's, then Sears, Pier 1, Hornbachers, and now K-mart is closing in a couple months.

Unclear how many Alco stores will be closing. I heard a list on the radio one day but then later read an article that led me to believe that they might eventually be closing all of them.
