Starting sunday Aug 4th, it will be interesting to see which businesses decide to open earlier than 11am/ noon. At least it is their decision to do so rather than the Gov telling them they can't.
What say you?#$%^&>

I hope Walmart liquor opens early on Sunday, so one can pick up food and beer before I watch some NFL jackass kneel for the anthem. Not sure why I watch anymore

Leaving the religious argument out of it I still think a common day off is a good thing. Neighbors get to know each other better, people get together for fishing, golf, softball, etc. It is sort of the weaver that stitches the fabric of a community. Unlike big cities where people don't know the family next door we know most all our close fellow citizens.

The retarded business people don't understand that people who make $70k a year are not miraculously going to have $80k to spend. It's one of the arguments for opening on Sunday. The other opening support comes from people who can't plan to purchase what they need on Sunday and buy it on one of the other six days.

I nearly always go out and eat on Sunday, but I always feel sorry for the waitresses and cooks. When travelling I am happy the gas stations are open on Sunday. Still I think we are also losing something.

I tend to agree PG.....there’s only so many pennies in a dollar. People figured out how to buy what they needed the other 6 days just fine for a long time. While this may be “more convenient” in our me me me world, I don’t see this as being too much of a positive in most cases. I don’t think businesses are going to make all this extra money from this change. In fact it could cost money to be open these extra hours. Just my opinion

It’ll help border cities like Fargo somewhat. Moorhead will take a small haircut, which it doesn’t need when competing with Fargo.

Lots has changed in this world since the Blue Law was enacted. Businesses in neighboring states that do not have such laws is just one instance of ND gov putting a self inflicting law forbidding a business owner to dictate their own hours based on many things..one of which is what is my competitor 2 miles across the river doing? We are not Little House on the Prairie anymore. Times change. Obviously long ago, Al Gore hadn't invented the internet yet, so online shopping has also dug into a small business persons pockets as well. It was long past time to retire the Blue Law.

Kind of like the madness that has gone on with Black "Friday" opening hours; I wonder if the earlier openings equate to much in terms of profits. I'm sure there are analyses that have been done; not that interested I guess to look into it.

I agree with Praire Ghost too. I think we are missing something, when we take away time that could be spent doing something else (heaven help us - maybe even spending time with family?).

I have played on both sides of this fence though. In college, I worked at a restaurant, and certainly worked sundays, and sunday mornings. A little later, I worked in retail, during the time when sunday opening became a thing. I recall my mother saying that people won't shop on sundays. Now, obviously, that wasn't true.

These days, a hardware store being open earlier on a sunday, may benefit me if I'm in the middle of a project, and need something to keep me going.

Somewhere above someone mentioned having liquor stores open early, so (thank goodness) they can get beer before the game.

To that, I'd simply say that maybe you should buy double-rations on Saturday - to get you through the day on sunday.

meh.

And for the BS that is Black Friday, I think the pendulum is swinging back against it (just a tiny little bit) when you see a retailer that says "we won't be open on Black Friday, so that our employees can spend time with their families"

I kinda like that.

People only have so much money to spend, allowing more hours for spending wont increase the overall $$$ each person is spending. Likely this will cost businesses more than it will profit them...

that there might be true but it should be the business decision to make.

I'm happy to see some people speak up. I was afraid this may be like the democrats calling everyone a racist to shut them up. This isn't 1850 anymore, but human psychology and physiology haven't changed. What has changed is people don't respect each other like they did in even 1950. People don't have time set aside to interact. Often the pro people think they are more sophisticated and look down on others, but I think it deserves a little more thought before we think it's progress.

One thing we learn about interacting with people is how they measure values. I always told my kids it isn't how much money you make, but how happy you are. To many look to the almighty dollar as a measure of value/quality of life.

How about we let people shop when they feel like shopping and let people open their business when they feel like it? Whether we are talking about shopping or drinking or smoking if a business owner isn't paying the bills they find a way to bring more $ in. Nobody is opening just because they can, out of spite, even though they are coming out behind. Same with holidays, many folks depend on that paycheck. If you actually think some horrible monster is forcing people to work instead of doing their best to make schedules that make the business stronger, maybe you better jump on the Bernie Bandwagon and start letting Uncle Sam take what he needs from you to even out everyones bank account. If Sunday morning isn't profitable then people will keep their doors locked, it's simple and there isn't any reason for anyone to care if they open or not. Zero reason to not let people shop on Sunday morning.

Think about how rich the business owners would become, if they just stayed open 24/7. A wee bit o' sarcasm..

I'm agreeing with Lycan. More hours do not make more money for the business owner.

KurtR too, has a point. The business owner will figure that out pretty quickly.
