If your goin for pure carnage a .220 swift is pure magic on pdogs if your looking cheap a good scoped .17 hmr can be quite satisfying a .223 is the in between I used to load high velocity varmint grenades they are fun I also reloaded some 55gr .243 rounds that were awesome and comparable to the swift, of course the 22-250 is also very fun the .204 is also a good round with no recoil. In my experience velocity is the key for carnage I used to guide hunts and anything kills and is fun but the after shot comments from the swift were priceless lol

I used a Rem 700 VLS 204 for several years, just too darned heavy. Now the go to is a Rem Number 7 in 222.

Fast twist rates @ less velocity can absolutely rival the "disassembly and hang-time" of the hot-rods.

Like a good many other critters, getting the results you want is about WHERE you place the bullet. If you want the PD to be doing cold-war era Romanian trapeze act stuff, you gotta get them right where the dog and the ground meet.

Where can I get exploding rounds and take out anything in say a 2 ft radius of where it hits?

I agree watching someone else shoot is probably the most fun, you really get to see the splat then. If you can find a town that hasnt been shot when the younguns start getting curious it can be pretty entertaining. A fast flying 6mm projectile can send several flying different directions simultaneously. I havent been out in quite a few years, but I used to take a white sheet and drape it over the box of my truck and shoot prone out of there with the tailgate down, you have to weight the ends to keep it fairly tight across the top, but it will provide some nice shade on those hot days and beats laying on the dirt.

And no snake surprises. Nothing more exciting than have a rattler crawl on to your shooting blanket. Don't ask me how I know and I even hate garter snakes. LB

The 22-250 with 53 v-max and 243 with 58 v-max did not disappoint this weekend. Went through over a hundred rounds of each.
A tripod is a game changer for field shooting.

What was the distance of your average shot?

Probably about 200 yards. Longest was like 380-something. Shortest was under 50. We're more into seeing how much splatter we can produce vs how far away we can get a hit.
Along those lines, Powder Valley has a bunch of Hornady seconds in stock.
