I have a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 with the 3.0 L turbo diesel engine. I took it in to the dealer for the second (15k) oil change. The fuel filter life shows 56% and the service tech suggested that "GMC recommends changing the fuel filter at 50%" so they strongly suggested the filter be changed. Not sure why I would do this when the indicator suggests it should go at least another 7500 miles. Is there a reason that the filter should be changed when it has ~ 50% life left?? Thoughts? Thanks!!

I do my oil at 50% or about 3k miles. I always change any filter/fluids prior to recommendation. Usually cheaper then the part its filtering for. I however dont believe GMC would recommend it bsfore its called for.

Sounds like you're putting on 7-10K Mi/yr. Replace it as it sounds like this will be the only oil change between now and winter. The filter is what will plug and be "gelled up" in cold weather.

Exactly! it should be replaced prior to winter and should be replaced at least once a year - mileage based or not. These are very easy to replace - spin off/spin on. It is really a 10 minute job.

Thanks for the advice! First time diesel owner. Looks easy to replace. Will drive it another 3-4k and change before heading south this fall.

I should probably track mine better than I do but it is easy enough to replace and fairly cheap compared to the oil change so I normally do it on oil changes and keep at least one spare handy for winter time if things start having issues.

I replace mine every 10K Mi, every other oil change.

I gel up on my ‘06 @ -20F ambient cured of needing to do that again.

04 duramax was a bitch to change. Sure as hell not going to be doing it out in a blizzard. The Ford top side canister was a breeze

They are just up selling, to keep warranty in check if needed do what brand says in your case GMC specks. I been down the road to many years and do service/IT work in dealerships I could write book about few dealers in Bismarck. Plus, my good friend and his brothers years ago where all Service Managers/ best Mechanics credentials in most of dealers in town. I have both gas and diesel trucks I do service when it tells me or what manual shows is that not way engineers set parameters. I only care in case of warranty now days. Been good all my life.

I have generally done all of my maintenance work on vehicles over the years. Age, bad knees and back have resulted in me needing to pay for some of these services this past year. I tend to look towards the GM dealers in Bis/Man for oil changes, etc. The first time in with our Acadia, I had requested Mobil-1. It appeared that they used AC Delco which I would have been ok with switching to but when I got the invoice it was listed as Mobil-1. I questioned the price and was told they are all the same. That caused me to use a different GM dealer for my 23 Sierra and then experienced a questionable up selling on the fuel filter. Just wanting to find an honest / reputable service department in the Bis/Man area.
