I may be a little biased on the gratis tag because i own land. I own a 160 acre pasture and a 47 acre farmstead that was inherited that my dad worked his ass off to afford. I went half on another 160 acres that me and my family have to sacrifice in order to afford. I picked up 160 acres in wyoming by constantly watching for land deals and just so happened to see something for the right price plus 1.5 acres on a lake in alaska. While others have hundreds of thousands of dollars tied up in expensive houses, pickups and boats and other stuff i bought land. I also dump thousands of dollars and lots of hours into habitat, raising birds and whatever else i can do along with allowing friends, family, and others depending on situation to enjoy my land and what it offers. If i can't get a tag to hunt my own property, why the hell would i put the effort into the habitat and bettering it for hunting. I would be better off breaking up everything i can, collecting the nice fat rent check and hiring a guide in another state and screw everyone else here that benefits from my work. So yes lets change the requirements or get rid of the tags and see how that all goes. I know i'm not the only one thats like this and more and more people will be like me as farms get split up more and more and smaller parcels are getting bought.

Give it a rest already you cry babies about gratis tags. My gosh!!! Go buy some fucking land and get your own gratis tag.
ya im sure all the gratis tags went to landowners in goat country. and all goats will be shot on their own property....and i am a landowner and i also pay my fair share of taxes for public ground. 160 acres for a gratis is laughable, should definately be a minimum of 640 or even 1280 for that matter. I know how hard it is for me to kill a mature deer on my 400 so i put in for a state tag. unless i get a gratis and just hunt it like a state tag.....

First off gratis tag minimum acres is 150 not 160 . Second , lots of people kill deer every year on the same 2 acres , or 5 acres or whatever all depends on what kinda land/area your hunting if your stand hunting a river bottom you don’t need much acreage/access . All depends on the land in your area your hunting

Not where I'd like to be
I just wish the fact that I happen to reside in Fargo didn't fuck me over right off the bat. When I had a tag 4 years ago it was crazy how I was treated for that fact alone. I did knock on lots of doors and did meet some very nice land owners, which I'm thankful to have met.
Dude, you never say you're from Fargo when out west. You might as well say you're from Wisconsin.

I'm with you on this. I think a lot of people could have their own little slice of paradise if they didn't need sparkly boats, brand new trucks, and a lake cabin.
I've been spending a lot of time and money building habitat on my 1/4 in SD. I get a non-resident landowner deer tag every year (the horrors!) and fill it on my property. I may just be some dickhead from ND, but I don't see any of the local farmers doing any habitat work.

Make doe tags the price of 1/2 beef and buck tags 1/4 beef and watch the herd and trophies flourish. (Gratis applicants get half off ) #sacrifices😎

The Homestead Act was for 160 acres. Provided the new owner did improvements and lived there.

NDSportsman, you should draft a Bill calling for 640 acres and the owner has to prove they live there and actively farm it to receive a gratis tag.

You can debate "no one makes a living on 160 acres anymore." How can you lose?
LOL the Homestead act? You mean when they thought this ND land was like Iowa and 160 was plenty for a family? LMAO.

I have 10 acres and could take a deer on it every year. I plant a small food plot on the 10 acres every year. why can't I get a gratis tag for my 10 acres ?

The best argument i would have is the value of the land to wildlife outside of food plot such as bedding, fawn rearing, winter cover. I know this doesn't solve that same problem for people who own 160 acres of farm ground that probably has less deer benefit than maybe your 10 acres. The gratis thing isn't perfect but i feel it gives wildlife a value to the landowners which may keep some of the habitat from being destroyed in favor of higher rent checks. Might keep some tree rows from being farmed through or grasslands being broken up for cropland. Maybe north dakota needs to go something like wyoming where they require a minimum animal usage days which is set by the area game warden.

Because 160 acres could potentially yield 16 gratis tags and then there wouldn't be ANY tags left for non-landowners at that rate. (Maybe your question was rhetorical). I don't hunt.

Would GnF release acreage statistic for gratis tags? My guess is if the minimum was bumped up to 640, it probably wouldn't free up too many extra tags. At least for antelope anyway.

This is the most logical and intelligent comment on this subject. I’d vote yes on this all day everyday.
Haha I thought if it was my land I could do what I want with it. If I don't want to farm or ranch it and set it up for hunting only why shouldn't I get a gratis. Sounds like you grew up with land will always have land and are unwilling to see the view us peasants have when it comes to hunting opportunities

People love to complain about gratis landowners but don't seem to say anything about land being leased for hunting rights. That apparently has got real popular around me. After doing a little digging recently within about a 10mi radius there is around 3,000 acres that is being leased for hunting because the landowners aren't into hunting much or only hunt a little. What gets me is some land is rented and the renter is charging someone else for hunting rights not the actual land owner.

I have no problem if someone rents or owns land for hunting the issue comes in when they get a gratis tag for said land. can the renter get a gratis tag for the land he rents for hunting right ?

I agree. I’d be curious to know how many gratis tags where issued 40 years ago compared to now. Back then there was a lot of small farmers and ranchers that have since been absorbed into larger operations. In theory there should be less gratis tags now because of less land owners. If these larger operations are getting multiple tags, then that’s on the G&F for allowing that to happen.
