I've mistaken them for Western Meadowlarks before. Will probably have to watch this.

Meadowlarks,few years ago pheasant hunting in Nebraska, local warden checking a group of Asian hunters, apparently someone reported them shooting out the Toyota car windows.... warden reported hunters (cough cough) had a dozen quail so they thought turned out a dozen Meadowlarks....lol.

No Orioles yet for me. Usually have a couple pairs nest nearby.

I wonder too, earliest I remember them showing up. Yesterday there were quite a few and busy , today I see a pair huddled together on the ledge out of the wind.

I’ve heard of people feeding them eggs and meal worms. Seems a bit extreme.

They will fend and find. They could be in Mobridge again by tomorrow afternoon. I've watched them land in the garden and eat bugs but that's usually later in the summer when the little's are just starting to fly. I looked at the migration map and some quite a way into Canada already.

I spotted a Cardinal in GF over the weekend. Heard it first. I am not a birder, but being at this stage of the game of life, it just comes natural?

It surprised me to recently learn that they do indeed starve.

WOW , I thought they were more resilient than that.

Robins and Flickers were here last week. Flickers really worked the yard over.
They can dig very deep.

Got 2 mallard hens somewhere in the swamp. 7 Drakes are circling the swamp.
Wife has started feeding some cracked corn. The Drakes don't like each other.
They must be young. Don't see any curls on the tails.

I know someone who had a few Martins get cold and flutter to the ground last year. They were to weak to fly because they could not find insects. This person caught them and brought them inside and offered them crickets from the local pet shop which they devoured. Once warm and fed, they were able to fly again. I hope I, I mean this guy, doesn’t have to do that again this year.

PS - they didn’t eat any egg shells or meal worms but loved the crickets.
