Do you have a lot of your own gear you travel with? The reel size and line weight would be crazy i assume for the big sharks and bluefin since you wouldn't be able to chase them being on shore.

pretty much all my own gear. Youd be amazed how big of a fish you can haul in on todays big spinning reels. I've caught 250-300+ pound sharks and rays on my Kastking Kapstan Elite 9000 spinning reel with 50lb test, and the reel has a peak 55lb drag, but you cant hold onto it when its almost maxed out, and I do have much bigger and heavier gear I leave down in Florida.

All different by application, FG knot on saltwater line to line top shots for sharks since the FG has the lowest profile for casting thru guides, regular Palomar to lures and some hooks, Albright from braid to mono/fluro leaders, Snell or uni to circle hooks to pull in line with the shank....

I'd love to do a thresher and mako on a lure without trolling. I'd keep ONE mako for the jaws/steaks; some for me and the rest to be sold to a market/restaurant. I'd probably give it away for the jaws cut out and a couple steaks. Fun Fact: Mako and swordfish are indistinguishable after being cooked.

I guess threshers swat lures with their tail first, often resulting in a tail snag and having to fight them in the hard way.

I don't know the available sizes: Black bass (sunfish) are currently the epicenter of ALL techniques.

I haven't been to florida in a few years but i will be back again. I enjoy surf fishing and my last trip to Sanibel Island was a blast. I do need to upgrade my gear. I bought a spinning and casting fenwick method travel rod set and on the casting setup i had an older shimano cardiff with 50lb power pro. First morning in the dark on a big junk of whiting I hooked into something large. I couldn't slow it down and was chasing it down the beach, I think i may have had a chance with it but the line kept burying into the spool and getting stuck and eventually it buried to deep i couldn't pick it out fast enough and it broke. If i go back a travel surf rod and a big spinning reel will be my go to, it's tough for me to get the casting distance with what i have now. I made the mistake my first year down and just took my pflueger reels from home from fishing here and ruined one of them from sand/saltwater even with washing them after each use.

Tarpon and a truly big snook is on my bucket list down there. I've hired two guides and both times it never worked, one time i was too early in the season i feel and the other time we had tarpon all around us but couldn't get one to take bait.

Then finished the trip giving the tarpon one more try. Lost a big one and a couple smaller ones also came unhooked. A few years later did it again and lost a ton before I finally got one the guide estimated at around 50lbs to the boat. They were using their tails to slap the mullet into the air before they’d go airborne to bite them. Timing that to hook up was difficult to say the least. Caught a ton of nurse sharks that day and still had time to run back to the mangroves for table fare. Did some deep sea stuff another day in the Keys. Have had some great trips down in the Gulf Shores area as well. I live way to far away from salt water. The ocean and elk hunting the mountains of the west have hooked me.

For Tarpon My daughter and I went out of Miami With Boomer he was always on TV we started out right outside the Buoys of Miami Beach caught several till Maceral started biting moved over to Governors Cut and Caught them non stop into the night most were from 80# to over 200# with several double hookups Quite the Circus Then. For Bucket list I would have to say a Buffalo hunt in Africa Only thing holding back is nowhere to hang the Trophy my walls are full.

Soak your new line in a bucket of water over night, then spool it onto your reel TIGHT!!! that will keep it from cinching down into your spool when you have big fish on.

Spray/soak your reels in aerosol dry silicone before you go do anything saltwater...even protects a pfleuger. I think you can still buy it at NAPA, blue & white can. Its not lube or oil, it goes on like wet alcohol, and dries quickly. Also works aweson on guns, and anything else you want to never rust or corrode.

Any pier south of Palm Beach is infested with tarpon. 30lb braid with a 3+ foot 30lb fluro leader and a circle hook, no weight. keep a bucket with an aerator, catch whatever baitfish is around, usually 8" to 12" cigar minnows. tail or nose hook one and toss it out. having 3 people is best, one to hold your rod while you run down to the beach to land the tarpon and another to take photos, but you can do it with two.

For distance you need a longer rod, and long rods usually dont come in travel sizes. I often buy a rod or two on location and just give em away when I leave......still waaay cheaper than hiring a guide.

Not to hijack the thread, but hopefully useful information for yall.
This is a lubricant that I have been using. They have similar at Menards that is a "WD product" (meaning like WD40 but instead is a dry film lubricant).

I also use this on my overhead garage doors (springs, rollers, etc.) and bike chain lubricant. Once you use it you probably won't look back either. I no longer use WD 40 Blasphemy LOL

I havn't tried ceramic, but I've put the silicone thru the toughest tests on reels that get routinely dropped in salt, sand, & surf with zero corosion. The stuff I use isn't much of a lubricant, but if you get it on your kitchen floor, plan on busting your ass in socks later that night...I'll see if I can find a can at home & post a pic

There is just something about saltwater fishing that i truly love. so many different species and you never know what you will hook into. We got a bonnet head shark when i was out after tarpon. We were using blue crab as bait and we would get bites and the crab would be missing perfect bite marks from the sharks. One day i will get my tarpon, the memories of having them on the surface and swim under the boat keeps me going.
