I heard it from someone else some time ago, although I don't remember where.
I'm gonna use it someday. My brother teaches (US history, government, minority studies) and thinks we don't need guns lol. I got a chuckle when he text me after the latest San Bernadino incident wondering what the hell a long gun was lol

So I've been married to my wife knocking on 30 years now. Up until recently she had never shot a gun. Had no interest in them even though growing up on a farm. We moved to Williston in 2005 for her work. Things changed drastically here as your aware. Two or three years ago she says she thinks she wants a gun and wants to learn how to shoot it. So we bought a smith and wesson body guard revolver for her to keep in the night stand. She just liked the way it feels, she has small hands. So a few months later she signs up for this self defense gun shooting class given by a retired cop/military dude. She comes home thinking she's Charlie's Angels. So we then get our CCW permits. She now wants a concealed weapon. So I buy her a sig PC238. Yesterday we head for the range. The two of us, my two boys, one boys girlfriend and the granddaughter. Three generations at the range. My wife shot the shit out of that gun. You'd think she'd been shooting for years. Even shot the oldest boys AR. Hit target 90% of the time. I'm thinking, wtf, I need to get her a shotgun and start pheasant hunting, more birds to bring home lol. We decide to all meet for supper in town afterwards. We're discussing the upcoming obama bans and wondering what all they'll be. Get done eating and head for Sportsmans Loft so the oldest can buy another AR. Well needless to say my wife is encouraging me to buy another weapon and lots of ammo. I'm thinking wtf? So I can't decide if I want a ccw or an AR. I eventually decide on the AR. Bring it home, we open it up and feel it and oooh and aaah and watch TV. Get up this morning and we are sitting having coffee. She says, "I think you better go in and buy that 9mm too, it'll be your birthday present". I looked at her and said "what the hell did you do with my wife".

Ok so the range was fun again. Momma drug me back to town and bought 2850 rounds of ammo today. I think we may be having an intervention rather soon. But not till after I get the new 9mm tomorrow lol

Now you need to start looking at 80% lowers and building your own ar-15 and ar-10. No paperwork.

No problem I have filed out plenty of background checks in my day. It I just nice to have one or ten guns not on the record.

hmm. didn't think any of them got on the record. I don't recall them giving any info to anyone about what guns I bought. I could be wrong just don't recall that.

I hope you paid cash, that alone might be enough to get you on a 'watch list'...

If you listen when they call in the background checks they specify whether it is a handgun or a longgun and you can bet your sweet patootie its going in some data bank that you bought that gun.

They don't know what the make, model, SN or chambering of said firearm is, just whether it's a handgun or long-gun. I suspect that question is on the form for 2 reasons:

#1. You are only allowed to take ownership of a handgun from an FFL dealer that is licensed within your state of residence. You can "buy" a handgun anywhere you darned well choose to, but, you can only take possession of it from an FFL dealer in your state.

#2. You have to be 21 to buy a handgun vs. 18 for long guns.

Please don't get me wrong for explaining the above, I think NICS is preposterous.

Regarding the OP, it's not unreasonable to have an entire season's worth of ammo, well before season begins. That applies to any and all seasons/ammo. If you shoot trap/skeet/sporting clays, it's wise to have your supply before season begins, same for any other shooting leagues/competitions as well as any/all hunting seasons. If you don't shoot any organized events/leagues and don't hunt but like to shoot paper targets, tin cans, gophers, bowling pins, or what-haveyou it's never a bad plan to have a "season's worth" whatever that means for you. Call it a "summer's-worth" if that makes more sense.

To me, ammo/reloading components are like any other household staple. We don't run out of milk, salt, sugar, laundry soap, shampoo, or toothpaste before we replenish. I use the same principle for ammo/reloading stuff. If you're shooting stuff you know is hard to get, you plan accordingly like you'd have to if you wanted king crab legs for a party over Labor Day 'cause you're likely not going into the local grocery store and buying them @ that time of year.

With all the shootings going on people in big cities want more gun control. It is just a matter of time until the left wing passes a bill similar to the healthcare bill on guns. The bill will be a complete pigf"ck! Stock up!
