keep in mind, not hardly a percentage of 8-10lb fish will make it to 13 or 14lbs. that's like an alien saying he released a bunch of large humans with the intentions of them all becoming as big as Shaq one day. And yes I know fish grow their entire life, but that growth rate has all but stopped at the last quarter of their lives.
If it meets the knife you are right it will never make 13 or 14.

Aw what the hell they will never be 10, 11 or 13, so might as well cut up all the 7 & 8s. Is this the new thing?

Well they wouldnt be called trophies if all you girls could catch em now would they.

Haha i dont fish the river with all those boats... Yuck! I believe in slot limits to protect the brood stock, I believe in God, and i hope Donald Trump becomes president and brings Merry Christmas back. Put that in your proverbial pipe and smoke it!

I have the same opinion as alot on this thread, release the bigger fish so hopefully one day that fish will bring a memory of a lifetime for somebody. My opinion there is nothing wrong with keeping a 10+ pound walleye. According to articles I have read, female walleyes that are 8 pounds and larger, their eggs are on the downswing. I truly believe the Missouri could pump out better numbers of 10+ walleyes if more people would be on the same page and they still could keep their 14 to 22 inch fish to eat. One thing I hopefully get to witness in my lifetime is a kid reel in a 10+ walleye in front of me on the Missouri and get to see their reaction, hopefully that kid might be mine!

For those who don't like eating big fish don't go to lake erie and go to the cleaning station you would have a coronary.

To add if you shoot any whitetail under 170 it is like sawing up an 8 pounder...............

Sum1 the guys in the boat with me know it was 10lbs as do I. I'm not holding it out far. I wasn't trying to master my pose as I wanted to get her back in the water as fast as I could. Nice try on being a dick tho.

During the early 80s the big lake was full of 5 to 8 pound walleyes. They tasted real good.

There's definitely a lot of things that have to go right to produce a "teener". I did a fly in up in Ontario a while back and the lake was a Trophy Waters lake. What that meant is the only fish that are kept are one or two 14-16 inch "lunchers" per person for a shore lunch and the rest go back. They have been doing that on this lake ~20 years now. About 16 of us fished for 4 days for about 10 hours a day. One 30 inch fish that might have tickled the upper 9's was was the biggest of the week. We caught piles of fish, but there still wasn't a plethora of trophy fish. I caught around 300 walleyes in 4 days and the best one I landed was 25-26 inches. I like to see the big girls go back as well. Anything over 23-24" feels a bit slobbish to cut up, but one might get knifed here and there. Most things I have read usually lean towards having a balanced fishery as far as size structure. I don't think most anglers are going out with the intention of trying to keep limits of 5-10lb walleyes.

i agree... i fished tobin for many years... they have a slot of nothing between 21 and 34"... it works up there... there is just some water that is "different" i think... there were many days you would catch 10+ slot fish per boat but couldn't get enough under 21's to get supper for everyone... my biggest up there was a 32 1/2" that i could have kept at the time, but it was a july fish (just under 10#)... i wonder what she might of weighed in april...

tobin and last mtn spoiled me... anymore i would rather catch 5 18's than 1 30"er... i think i just wore my "big fish" thing out...

Plenty of larger sized "oily/fatty" type baitfish seem to be one the main keys to produce giant eyeballs.

funny thing is though, the reservoir just upstream is codette... we would go there on bad weather days and get our "take home fish" at 21" or less, and lots of 10" perch... same water, just on the upside of the dam...

on the tobin side of the dam we would also catch saugers up to 16", but never saw one in slower water like we do in sak...

Beautiful Fish!!! Congratulations!! As far as the keep or put back, keep whatever you want. I've knifed quite a few walleyes over 8 lbs in my time. The biggest was an 11 lb gill hook from LOW. Not my fish and the angler couldn't afford the mount, but I got every piece of meat off her I could. Most of the others were gill hooked or seen floating after release, but a few were kept because the angler flat out wanted to keep the fish. Like has been said before, releasing an 8 lb fish is no guarantee it will gain one oz of weight....ever. The way I look at it, is that I've already been blessed with a trophy walleye. I have a 13.5 pounder that is at the taxidermist so keeping another one is just taking the opportunity of catching a fish of that caliber from someone else. However, if I catch a 15 or bigger, I WILL keep another one. No question about it. (Grin) Again, Congratulations on a tremendous trophy!!!!
