Did some ultimate tensile strength testing this evening on Sufix invisiline ice fluorocarbon 3 LB line, Power Pro microfilament braided 5 LB, and two different knots joining them: the double uni and the alberto. I have been running ice rods with the Power Pro main line and Sufix leader with a double uni for a few seasons without too many heartaches.
Sufix had a range of 2.2 to 2.5 with an average of 2.35 LB.
Power Pro had a range of 7.0 to 8.6 LB with an average of 7.95 LB.
The double uni had a range of 2.0 to 2.5 with an average of 2.2 LB.
The Alberto had a range of 2.1 to 2.4 with an average of 2.2 LB.
All joined lines tested broke in the Sufix right at the knot.
I did not do anywhere near enough tests to call this statistically significant but it was enough for me to draw some conclusions for myself.
1. Power Pro is awesome, which I already knew.
2. I should try something other than the Sufix 3 LB.
3. The double uni and alberto are both structurally efficient but the Alberto is a little faster to tie.
