Sak Van Hook 8/3/2024

Went up to Van Hook to take my 86 yr old stepdad and brother-in-law out fishing. We stayed mostly up in the very north end of Van Hook and pulled spinners with crawlers in 8-24 ft of water. Most of our keeper eyes came shallow over by the old swimming beach area.

Here's our total catch over 8 hours on the water:

4 walleye, 18-19 inches
2 walleye between 13 and 14 inches
~10 walleye between 6 and 13 inches

1 carp, 8 lbs
1 catfish, about 22 inches
1 perch, 6 inches
3-4 smallies, between 14 and 15 inches
3 white bass, 10-12 inches
4 drum, 12-16 inches
5 goldeye, 14 inches and up

I am not sure I've ever caught this many different species in one outing before.

Is there a reason for this? I’ve always wondered why goldeyes get smacked over the side of the boat.

Lots of people dislike them as they can be pesky bait stealers to go along with the disappointment handed out when you realize what you're reeling in.

At the same time, I am pretty sure young goldeye are important forage fish for pike and probably walleyes.

I've only known a couple people who tried eating them. Their reviews on the dining experience have kept me from ever wanting to try one.

I literally don't remember if my dad caught 1 or 2, that would be the difference as I know my BIL and I each caught one.

Right, I was there and I'm still not sure if it was a good day or sucky day.

Even more impressive is to have an 86yr old in the boat for 8 hrs.! Thats memories right there!!

He's got his health issues, but he's a trooper! Note, it's a lot easier on the Toon as he can get up and move around a bit, but damn...I keep a close eye on him as the wind picks up!

Kept the cat, not the drum. Never tried them, but I've gutted hundreds.

Family and even better with pops they are gone all too quick, enjoy and have fun nice day to be out. If anybody likes pitching jigs in shallow with weeds 3 to 10 feet for big ones.

No pre fished it with couple anglers last three tournaments that have places up there. I don't care about pros they just keeping sponsors happy been their done that.

Pelicans need an easy meal sometimes too! They can’t eat big carp so those don’t get the same treatment

Define "big". I watched a pelican eat what must have been a 6-7 lb carp a few weeks ago. That SOB had no need for the Heimlich maneuver!
