What da h lot of hype. Anyone buy one yet? Reminds me of when daiwa came out with the magforce. No backlash so they say. Why would u have an adjustment at all? They show no thumb on spool just like daiwa did back in the day. I free spool 99% time. If the new reel is perfect then why the adjustment?

Is the Shimono Curado DC still a thing? I remember seeing those back when I was getting into baitcasters, not very price friendly for a beginner coming out of college.
I stand by my electrical tape trick. Run 100-150ft of line out, put a piece of tape across the spool and reel the line back up. It really helps the oops backlash or while still learning how to control the reel by stopping it and being able to either pull it out or easily cut it out and reset it.

Sometimes I just like throwing a little bit of excitement into my day of relaxation. If I don't have electric tape on a baitcast reel I like to sing Danger Zone while I am casting and play clips of various high speed come-a-parts or wrecks in 1980-90's fashion in my head

I still have a NIB Shimano Calcutta DC LH retrieve on a shelf, never have given it a whirl. That said, I can toss a bait caster pretty fair. Less energy and movement required to toss a bait, less fatigue, better accuracy, better distance control, exponentially less line-twist, I LOVE a good bait caster.

Your only hope in Asia or the Pacific Rim to NOT end up with a hunk of dogshit is Japan. Reels are ‘Bout like boots, doesn’t matter what the box says, who put their name on it, Pacific Rim/Asia = it’s still dogshit.

Have you tuned the reel correctly for what he's casting? I'm a newbie to baitcasters and this helped me a ton.

Fill the reel with 6/20 braid at proper level. Tie on (Palomar Knot) a quality "saltwater rated" bbl swivel, attach a 4/6in leader of your choice of material (if braid ALWAYS Palomar--SCREW everything "else"). Pike cut braid like tissue paper. Be inventive of the presentation (wire) attached to the swivel: Spool depth will be preserved for years: The later "hairs" don't make a shit and Sharpie makes the markers to camo if necessary.

Anyways; send the kid out in the yard to practice casting with diminishing weight when one is "easy".

Braid backlashes can be 99% unfucked with patience. Mono will fuck your day.

Teach the kid how to fight a fish by being the target. The "lure" should land at your toes. Grab the weight, "fight" and coach/explain "things" all the way back to the toes. Try to create slack as things progress. This is by no means exclusive to BC.

Be creative. Preserve the spool. Fly fishermen know.

I started with baitcasters never really learned to cast a spinning reel. The old trigger ones i could but still struggle with a spinning reel. Thats my goal before i die to be 100% accurate with spinning reel.

I did not know that shimano made this type of reel. Learn something new everyday. I still question why have a adjustment on the side if it breaks for you.

PS i hated the first magforce i purchased and do to that fact i never bought another daiwa until a couple years ago with a tatula.

YOu could not get that magforce to free up - i finallly took the magnets out and still was sht.

I have both. Can cast with both. Am more accurate casting to a spot with spinning. Spinning seems to work better for lighter lures. I prefer holding the rod when reeling a spinner over holding the reel when reeling a bait cast as I can feel bites better. Tell me if I am doing something wrong.

I bought, and still have, this color/model 5500C from Sioux Sporting Goods in Bismarck in late 70s. It came with different size reeds a guy had to change out. Yes, reeds... little lengths of reeds on shafts that centrifugal force would force out to create friction on a drum. The faster the spool spins the greater the resistance of the reeds on the drum. Quite the relic but it was the one to have back in the day.

Spent years baitcasting in MN for LM bass from a canoe with my brother in the 80s. Until we bought a boat that made other species worth pursuing.

When MagForce came out we jumped on it. Monstrous improvement over reeds. That said, after a while, you pretty much start backing off the magnets because they cost you distance. At some point you pretty much prefer to "cast naked" and deal with the rare backlash when you get distracted somehow.

How they sucker you into bait casters- just buy a nicer one, it won’t backlash. Buy nicer one, get backlash, buy nicer one. And repeat. While the kid with the 202 is casting his jig half a mile lol.

Years ago bought the Black Widow combo from Cabelas'. Was suppose to be backlash free. Dinked around with that things in the backyard, watching YouTube vids adjusting brakes, tension, etc. No dice, boxed up and away she went.

I suggest he try the electric tape trick I have mentioned on here before. Basically pull out about 100ft of line put a piece of electric tape across the spool then reel the line back over it. Also as CatDaddy said learn to tune for your setup

I will 100% be buying one. I have about four Curados and just last month got a Curado DC. Most beautiful casting baitcaster I have ever used. The Voltiq is Abu Garcia version of Shimanos DC. If it is as good it will either be DC’s or Voltiqs here on out. The Voltiq is $50 cheaper from what I’m seeing.

The DC on the Shimano stands for Digital Control. Has a micro computer controlling the braking system. Voltiq will have the same thing.
