    Water levels?

Umm, inflows to Sak have been nothing special. What you were witnessing the past few days is called seiche. It's a standing wave created by wind blowing consistently from one direction. Inflows from the Yellowstone and Fort Peck have only been about 14-15k cfs combined, add another 1400 from...

    April Blizzard Predicted next week

Frost may not be all the way out yet, but it's getting pretty deep all across ND. https://www.ndawn.ndsu.nodak.edu/deep-soil-temperatures.html I love having this data available to us nowadays, 10 years ago there were like 2 or 3 soil temp profiles in the entire state. Now we are starting to...

    April Blizzard Predicted next week

I think the biggest wildcard this weekend is that there will be thunderstorms, maybe even thunder snow. Last I looked the best chance for t-storms is in the area between Bismarck and Jamestown. The rest of the west will likely see strataform rains with rates of 0.1-0.2 inches per hour, and...

    Whoopers

Actually, there is. But he looks thin enough to be a plywood cutout. Oh yeah, and I think I was as surprised as most of you with the numbers. I guess they use Long Lake NWR as a stopping over point, so I kind of wonder if they didn't get piled in there because of the recent weather. By far...

    Whoopers

So I happened to find myself outside in the middle of the day on the 20th, and wow...I was not disappointed. I had somewhere around 50-60 whooping cranes circling over my place for about 20 minutes. It's been a few years since I've seen a whooper, but this is by far the largest flock (actually...

    April Blizzard Predicted next week

I don't think you understand what you're looking at. That is a percentage of stored water as snow/ice/whatever compared to the historical average for this time of year. This may bring us closer to normal for this time of year with snow in the mountains, but it doesn't replace what has...

    Buying a boat.

If the fuel tanks were at a 1/4 or so, I'd just fill with fresh gas and add a can of Sea Foam, charge/replace the batteries and let'r buck. If the gas tank was full, yeah...I'd probably try to drain a fair amount before refilling. Check the lower units by pulling the bottom plug to see if they...

    April Blizzard Predicted next week

Measuring snow received is probably the most difficult thing to do accurately. What I recommend to people is to choose a spot that looks "representative" of the greater surround area. Then I use a measuring stick in the form of a 3/8 copper pipe that I have the number of inches from the tip on...

    Sakakawea letting precip go downstream.

Not true. Lake Sak doesn't necessarily have a bright future when it comes to water levels this summer, but it is the reservoir that is to be favored for steady to rising water levels during the early part of summer for spawning purposes. I'd suggest in the future to immediately dismiss such...

    April Blizzard Predicted next week

db-2, I'm not so sure we will see a lot of runoff from this. Thus far the weather forecast is for a fairly slow climb in temps, and since it's all sitting on thawed soils, I am guessing we will see a lot of this disappear right into the ground. I'd be a lot more concerned if we were expecting...

Link? I guess I'm not sure of which part of the page you're referencing. I just looked at Bismarck's precip total via the hourly forecast and it still had precip amounts for us. https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=46.7651&lon=-100.701&unit=0&lg=english&FcstType=graphical

    April Blizzard Predicted next week

Back in the good ol' days of $1 gas, this would be cause to grab a shovel and go burn a tank of gas on the backroads. Now I sit and cook ribs at home as I watch the snow pile up on the deck. I must be getting old.

    April Blizzard Predicted next week

Yep, there's been an inkling of a second round come next week. Still a bit too far out for the NWS to really have much confidence in it materializing, but it's been on the backend of the models for several days already. Damn chains fell off my snowblower's tires during the last event and I...

    Boat camping?

That is a fairly specific request. I've had a few of these through my life. I hope yours work out better than my average hair-brained idea. When it comes right down to it, we are often disappointed in the outcome. Nonetheless, they make the bestest of stories that you may be telling for many...

Remember, this is just one of many models, there are others that aren't so generous. That's why one rarely sees a given model run as the actual weather forecast, there needs to be a bit of a balance between the models that are overly generous, and those that show pretty near zero.

As of this past Wednesday, here in Bismarck we were frost free down to 22 inches, but then it was still frozen from 22-44 inches. - - - Updated - - - Let's not get carried away with what this means for the big lakes. Sheesh...

    Expedition Bigfoot

Not so much of a bigfoot believer, but alien life is nothing but a mathematical probability to me. Now, whether or not they have the tech or the give-a-shit to come and visit us is a whole different subject. Is Earth their zoo, and is the concept of traveling that far across the universe...

    Sakakawea Outlook 2022?

Yeah, the bottom line is the upper Missouri (including most of ND) has been quite dry the past 6-8 weeks. And that sucks, we were in striking distance of a near normal runoff at the end of January, but things have really gone downhill since then.
