Red River Find of a Livetime - Stag Antler

I think that's why I automatically thought stag - possible misinformation and adrenaline! That being said, I saw male elk referred to as "stag" so it may be just misunderstood terminology. My guess, after researching, is Eastern Elk. Larger than it's western counterpart and carrying a rack...

Red River Find of a Livetime - Stag Antler

I measured at 11" around at the widest points - base and second tine Now the trick is how to preserve it.....wrapping in a wet towel tonight to let it dry slower. I'll ask the Heritage Center tomorrow for tips.

Red River Find of a Livetime - Stag Antler

I may have been misinformed by info from a guy who found one in 2012. He said he sent his to "Bismarck", not sure where, and they told him it was stag. Best I can find, stag have never lived in North America except a stag-moose which I'm pretty sure this is not. I did measure mass by pulling...

Red River Find of a Livetime - Stag Antler

How far along was the coyote in the decomposition cycle? That would be nasty - I've seen my share of beaver, deer, cats, etc. and they get to a bloated point where you think they are going to explode!

Red River Find of a Livetime - Stag Antler

Thanks svn. This is what I love about river fishing on the Red, you just never know what you're going to stumble across. I've found bison horn, deer antlers, a safe, an anchor the same day I lost mine. I'd rather never find a dead body......

Red River Find of a Livetime - Stag Antler

I talked to the owner of Fargo Bait and Tackle - he has a picture of a guy who found a complete antler of similar size in the Red near Fargo. The guy claims he sent it to Bismarck and it came back REALLY old and that it was a stag. I'd post a pic of that one, but not my pic so I won't. I gave...

Red River Find of a Livetime - Stag Antler

Ok, so basing my thoughts on the find on an article I read about a guy who pulled a giant stag antler from the Red River at low water....not sure what it is but it is massive, old, and really neat. I need to figure out where to take it to get it ID'd.....suggestions? I'll post a pic of me...

Red River Find of a Livetime - Stag Antler

Red River Find of a Lifetime Pic speaks for itself - found a partial stag antler on the red....unbelievable mass. Picture doesn't do it justice. Was offered $100 for it on the river by another boat, think I'll keep it. Wow!

    Thank You!

GREAT story and truly what being a sportsman is all about. On another note (and not a dig by any means Buzzkill), does anyone else own and carry a paddle? I've been up the creek without one and if nothing else it gives me an option. Kinda clumsy in the boat, I know, but an option depending...

    Tagged Catfish on the Red?

I caught two in Fargo last year and called them in - got info back pretty quick and was very interesting! Need the tag number though - I'm sure you grabbed it. The two I caught travelled from Manitoba to Fargo over two years time each. One had lost 5 lbs from when it was weighed up there and...

    Catch and Release Tourneys

looking for an informal league (cumulative) for friends.....want to stay within the law. looks like we'll have to do no (or less than 5 dollars per angler) entry fee and go for pride....catfish on the Red. We'll go with the honor system of weigh and photo, then immediately release. Pride over...

    Catch and Release Tourneys

I was sure there were - she told me that you could get a permit from them but that she was not aware of any being given in recent history....You're talking reputable tourneys that practice legally, correct? I'm sure you are.....seemed like an odd answer from her.

    Catch and Release Tourneys

I looked into setting up a league and was informed that there are no live release tourneys in ND - I don't know if I believe it but am not a tourney fisherman or follower. Are there tourneys or leagues that reduce fish to livewell, bring back to weigh in, then release? I got my info directly...
