6.5 flavors followed by 6mm but have a hankering for a big 30 some thing like the 300 norma mag
Either one will take out any critter on this continent with a well placed shot at a variety of ranges. I've shot an .06 for 20 years with a lot of dead animals and no complaints of the caliber. One of these days I'm going to break down and try something new, however it will be hard not to grab the old .06 if something is needing killin. My search right now will be for an easy, light shooting, accurate gun for the boy who'll get his first deer tag next year. I'm sure he'll end up with something much nicer than I have, which seems to be the trend.
That was the first and last time I allowed someone to record me deer hunting. I can't take the pressure that comes from being a tacticool celebrity operator.
I have a bunch of new shooters coming up over the coming few years. To start out the bunch, I bought my son a Tikka T3 in 243. It fits the 11 year old quite well and comes with an interchangeable butt pad/stock extension for when the boy gets older. He took out his first deer with it this past weekend with about a 140 yard shot. Badda bing, bada boom.
Note, I looked at all the cheaper rifles, the Howa (nice action glued to a fricking 4x4 nowadays...taking advice from Savage of yesteryear???), Ruger American (just smells cheap), Mossberg (hate their shotguns, can their rifles be any better?), and the Savage (getting better, but still junk IMHO). I came pretty close to a Remington model 700 which I already own and love, but the Tikka was partially a novelty buy for me.
.270 for me. Have read too many articles from "experts" saying .270 is probably best all around gun etc. With the right rounds they are fast and flat. That's what i like about them. Have 2 and have never had an issue killing deer or a bear. Going to use it on a cow elk in a month. I have some interest in the 6.5 creedmor. Research shows its a pretty solid all around gun. Great long range gun with little recoil. Hits hard apparently. However, to my knowledge it isn't made by any manufacturers I like.
I have the model 10BA Stealth in 6.5. It had a lot of milling marks on the lands so it would not shoot subsonics. I sent it in and the barrel it came back with was very smooth. It now often groups under .2 inches. I bought the specific rifle because I wanted how the stock and magazine were set up. I think perhaps their best rifle is the one with accustock and 5R rifling. I don't think anything short of a custom rifle will outshoot that rifle. I looked at them at Dicks sporting goods last year, but can't find them on the Savage site today. Maybe a custom run. They were law enforcement series. If I run across it again I'll post up.hate to say it... but, savage makes a good gun right off the shelf in 6.5. reviews are something else. if you are ok with the accu-trigger. some folks are not fans.
I am strongly considering the Tikka as well for the boy, have to decide on caliber 1st. .308 and 7mm08 have me very intrigued at this point for the boy, however I ain't ruling out the tried and true .243
Sorry to get off topic of the .270/-06 debate, please don't give me a neg rep you tittysprinklers:;:cheers not sure if my fragile self could handle it.

Whats your question? Looks like you made up your mind, or is this yet another thread to stir the pot?
have a tikka in .243 and .270wsm. absolutely will be buying a tikka for dirtymike jr.
SDMF,
30.06 in a Savage is the cat's ass. Especially with the accu-trigger. You know I'm right.
Makes one hell of a good fence post or handyman jack handle.
Sounds like a comment from a Remington shooter.
270........wsm
