Curious who uses an CPA to prepare their taxes?

Last year was my wifes first year of being full time self employed and we dont want to mess our taxes up when we file....

Will it save us $$$? Im hoping!

Any recommendations of a good one in Bismarck area? Advice appreciated.

I'd be interested too. I want an accountant who is not afraid to go to prison....if you know what I mean.

We use a CPA. Nice when we had more than 2 jobs with one being self-employed. I guess I pay to avoid a head ache and for the convenience.

My taxes aren't very complicated, but I don't do it for a living so I think CPAs might have an edge in preparing them over of me.

One does not necessarily need a CPA, the key is to find someone knowledgeable enough to warranty their work with a "you'll pay only the extra tax" clause that has them paying any penalties and interest. Many of them are CPA's, but not all are.

Rhonda at the Mandan office did ours last year and we are pleased so far. I guess you really don't know how good any of them are until you're audited.

I don't itemize anymore so I do sometimes wonder why I pay the accountant for tax prep when it is fairly simple. One reason is that we do have a couple sideline businesses with partners and we are the managing partner. Not huge money but I do like the comfort of knowing the tax prep was done correctly. One thing about an accountant doing your taxes, they will only assume responsibility for the information you give. You misrepresent without their knowledge and they are not responsible. That makes sense to me. It's an expense but it's also simpler for me.

If it's just send in your 1099's and either a check or a refund then the postcard or online is very easy as well. If you itemize then make sure you do it correctly.

I've often wondered about this. We used to use them, but quit because we were paying in every year. So on top of that we had to fork out like $100.00. Started going turbo tax route like 4 years ago. Simple to do, and cheaper. Still paying in, but at least save a little. Only thing I wonder about often is whether or not we are missing out by not having someone else looking at them to see if maybe we should be crossing a different Tor dotting another I to put us back into at least breaking even.

In 1969 I enter the work force and had a tax man do my wife and my taxes. Took him about 10 minutes and the cost was $15.

I said never again and learn. I was making 1.50/hour then. Even with some self-employment income I have done my own.

Yes I have had to amend my returns a time or two and yes I have had IRS threat to de-nut me more than once but always won.
My wife would get nervous a time or two due to me losing my man hood but it is still there.

Am I ahead or behind the game by doing myself since then? I have no ideal. db

Yes you will get a return because they made some of the IRS people go back to work without pay. We haven’t gotten a return for I don’t know how long. If I worked for the Guberment I would not go to work unless i got paid. You people that get returns could just suck it ;:;rofl

I've often wondered about the savings or non-savings as well by using an accountant. One time I even thought about taking my taxes to two different tax preparers to see if the numbers came out the same. My regular accountant vs HR Block for example. I wonder if I could deduct both preps on next years return?

If your paying in every year and paying someone to do your taxes all that means is if you don't like paying in when you file, claim less at work for payroll. Then they take out slightly more.

I think it can be beneficial to have an accountant do them versus turbotax. Unless you really only have W-2s and they are extremely simple. Last year, our accountant had a $500 deduction that I didn't know about that we were able to claim. Saved a couple hundred bucks on taxes just with one extra deduction. That more than paid for the extra $50-60 he charged me versus what turbotax would have been.
