If you get a model that plugs into your 12vlt outlet, you better plan on keeping your truck running or having a dead battery in the am. They draw a ton of juice.

3Roosters says its a plug, which is definitely preferable. If I needed to run the truck all night for some reason, they'd be sleeping in the cab.

Can you recommend a specific unit? That looks perfect.

This is what I have. I'm sure O'Reilly's has them. Phillips and Temro car warmers. Back a few years I owned an English Setter (R.I.P.). They are very thin skinned so I wanted to make sure he was as comfy as possible in the back of the truck topper, especially if temps were below zero overnite. He did have an insulated crate jacket on his crate also but this heating unit seemed to take the edge off the cold. By no means would it be fry an egg hot, but rather just make the topper less cold. He was an inside family dog as is our current Springer's, so not used to being out in the cold overnite so want to make them as comfy as possible since they aren't used to it, especially as they age and joints start hurting...like me..haha At any rate..if inside the hotel isn't an option, this unit has served me well. Run an extension cord thru the side window of the topper, plug this unit in and there you are.

I have found this year I have to keep a close eye on my lab... he is only 3 and his drive to hunt seems much stronger than I had anticipated... I check him while walking and after as well... we have gone on a 7 mile walk and a 10 mile one... so he has to get some water, treats, and a good once over (that's if and when i can get him to stop)... I would like to find him a chest protector that won't do more damage than the stuff he is running through... the neoprene ones rub him raw (he is still recovering from opening weekend)

When I was younger and in good shape I had German Shorthairs we would hunt until we dropped in our tracks, then as I slowed down a little I had Brittanys, now that I'm down to one leg I have an arthritic 7 year old Lab.

My Lab is 7 and slowing down as I am, we make a well matched pair we're slow but steady hunters. Instead of a pickup I have a van now, we're a team we either sleep in a motel room or the van together. I have a propane heater rated for inside use and a dog bed for him and a sleeping bag for me.

Many years ago I got in the habit of checking my dogs after we're done walking or hunting. I make sure they have food and water and then I go over every inch of them and fix or treat whatever is wrong as it happens.

I'm happy to be in the company of good caring hunters and outdoorsmen in here. I'm so sick of the other kind of dog "owner".

this one is simple, sleek, tough - it's kept the magic from dribbling out of Royce - I'm really glad the first one I bought seems perfect - how often does that happen? ;:;banghead

- - - Updated - - -

and I've never had to mess with those "seven adjustment points" - ha ha - just that feature alone scares me about many products

- except BatVests and ice fishing gear

Yep I'd be careful with vests on labs. I used the skid plate on mine and it rubbed his belly bare several years ago - haven't used one since other than on cold waterfowl hunts (neoprene vest) and have had no issues. Have seen other labs rubbed raw in the arms & legs by vests; just don't think they're really necessary for labs.

Huh? I don't see how this is even possible with the Skid Plate I posted. Too small?

I plan and plan and plan for opening rooster season every year...making my list and checking it twice...well..this year I should have checked it 3 or 4 times as I forgot my dog's vest..pretty much looks like the one Guy posted above. While the vest wouldn't have stopped the results of a run in with barb wire, it CERTAINLY would have shielded her from many of the quills from a porky that she found the first hour of hunting!!! That year and half old girl went thru the school of hard knocks that first weekend. Graduated with honors and ready to rock and roll again later that day. Dummy me..of course I didn't forget to pack the blue nummies!

Have a tall fiberglass topper on my extended cab, 8ft bed. During the fishing season go any where with the pooch. Foam bed with a sleeping bag, good enough for me. I don't know who snores louder me or pooch, but man can that dog fart. Come cool weather then one of those little electric heaters set on low is good enough, will cook you right out of there.:;:thumbsup

Here's something that was passed on to me by my Grandpa when I was in Jr High School. He told me that going out and getting in the stickers, freezing water, rain, heat, tough conditions was MY choice. My dog was along because I brought him and he wanted to please me and be with me so it was my responsibility to always take care of him first then myself.

Since then I've always tried to live up to that.

Probably. I messed around with a few different brands when my lab was young and just couldn't find one that worked very well. Certainly my inexperience played a factor. Either didn't fit right or didn't stand up to use, then when the belly got rubbed raw I gave up. Seems like most of those upland-type vests weren't really cut for deep-chested labs. No problems in the hundreds of days afield for the pup since I quit using one.

I use the skid plate on my Britt and it works with adjustments. I did get her a small for her this year. Last year she had a medium and it was just a bit big. Once in a while she managed to get a front leg caught up, she just kept on hunting . On three legs. God I'm going to miss her some day.
