Beef prices going up????

There's some inventive costs. Since you have to eat to survive, how is that a business cost?
Agreed.

The guy I know has been a self-made and very successful farmer around the Pierre area for years. Got sick of farming and decided to take up cattle about 6 years ago (odd change I know). No machinery costs other than maint., cash buyer for everything. He DOES have cattle so the "he could rent the land" statement makes no sense as he doesnt need to (no a loss in income as it is used to support the operation) as does the feed the family comment as we all have to eat (and he has no kids or spouse) nor any full time hired men.

But, yes. Alot of $$ in a successful for taxes, maint, repairs, ins, etc. This all gets watered down with scale of operation, cash buyer, etc causing the cost/animal to drop significantly.

If you figure food as a budget expense when you work a 9-5, why wouldn't you consider it an expense when raising cattle for a living?

Who does that? As far as a business exspense. If you're counting food you could count everything! Every penny spent?

I’ve been raising cattle for 35 years. So because he has cattle on the land I guess it’s free. Like I said, you can do creative math all you want but if you are not figuring your actual expenses you are fooling yourself. There is also way more to family living than eating. I have an accountant do all my books so I see first hand what it cost to raise cattle. I have a feeling I will be told by all the experts that dont have cattle that I’m wrong.

Best beef in ND! Cody and Deanna are great people and have been good friends of mine since before kindergarten. I could tell you some “good” stories about Cody and I when we were in high school, but I’ll refrain. 😬
Says you, I will take corn/grain fed out beef over grass fed any day of the week. I have had grain feed and grass fed in my hands and the fat and marbling is so much better with the grain feds. I stopped at Alsager Meats in Fargo and they had grass fed Ribeye on sale so I bought two of them. The flavor and juices were not there. Next time I went in there I commented on them. They said they have to carry them as lots of people like the grass fed beef.

I prefer grass fed beef. Hands down.

To me it just tastes better. Personal preference I guess.

Ps: I have never tried Alsager’s stuff

Speaking of Alsager Meats, I just won half a beef cut and wrapped from them. They donated it to the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Medora and I bought a $10 raffle ticket last June. I actually thought the person who called me from Medora was scamming me because I did not remember buying a raffle ticket. I was shocked when I found out what half a beef is worth. I'm waiting to hear back from them about when and where to pick up the meat. I have no idea how much a half beef weighs but from what I see on the internet it could be between 200-250# and worth around $2500. Will have to buy another deep freezer because my little 5 cu. ft one is half full. Will probably give at least half of the meat to some local charities because I can't eat that much beef in 2 years.
