Police spokeswoman Charity Charamba said Tuesday that Quinn Swales was in Hwange National Park when he spotted six lions on Monday.
"One of the lions had cubs and they became hostile. Mr. Swales at first manage to scare the lions away but then the male lion later made a U-turn and attacked him," Charamba told The Associated Press. None of the tourists was harmed, she said.
Swales was leading six tourists on a walking safari when he spotted fresh lion spoor and decided to track a pride of lions consisting of two females, two cubs and two males, according to the Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority.
The collared lion, named Nxaha, attacked Swales, the parks authority said.
Cecil's killing in July by American dentist James Walter Palmer just outside the park sparked outrage in the United States. The collared lions are being monitored for an Oxford University study.
Camp Hwange, the safari company that employed Swales, said the 40-year-old guide succumbed to the injuries on the same day he was attacked.
"He was tracking lions when a male lion unexpectedly charged," said Camp Hwange in the statement issued Monday, adding that Swales was leading a photographic walking safari when he was attacked.
Camp Hwange's Facebook page says it offers game drives and game walks where "game likely to be encountered include all of the cat family, wild dog, elephants and buffalo in huge numbers."
The parks authority said a man who sells curios to tourists was killed by an elephant in the resort town of Victoria Falls, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) from Hwange, also on Monday

What a way to go. :( I have to admit the tread title and the subsequent thoughts that lions are over there counting coup cracks me up a bit.

That guy was from sconny scoping out new land to rape and plunder. The lion just did what he needed to do to protect the African perch.

I guess Nxaha found a way to fix stupid! In all seriousness it's too bad as I hate to see people lose their lives for careless actions.

That, and ending up spending eternity as decaying cat-shit might just be the worst insult one could suffer.

I can't believe there isn't any outrage in the fact that this pride of lions lured the group out of the safety of their sanctuary (i.e. Vehicle) and jumped this poor guy without a fair fight. Where's the justice in that??? And I'm guessing he probably wasn't killed immediately so the lions let him suffer before he died. The injustice!!! (Please note sarcasm). Funny how when the roles are reversed there isn't the same outcry of support. While I am definitely not supporting Palmer, I do believe in innocent until proven guilty. I feel bad for the guide and also the tourists, can't imagine living with that mental image of your vacation.

Tracking a pride of lions with no intention on hunting them. Real brillant. At least it was only the dumbass guide that died as it was most likely him leading the tracking effort.

If they had lions in Yellowstone they'd probably kill a thousand tourists a year.
Worst place I've ever seen for people getting too close to animals.

This makes me want to watch 'the Ghost and the Darkness', again. Kick ass movie, and I don't particularly like movies.

Wow, Karma! Pride of Lions Kills 5 Poachers in Sneak Attack

“The men were visibly traumatized by the attack,” said Commissioner-General Chihuri,“and after seeing their injuries and the remains of their dead comrades, I can see why. These guys were tough criminals carrying ak-47s, but they were literally shred to pieces and devoured by the lions. I have never seen an animal attack reach this level of violence, and I have seen a lot!
Chihuri’s statement highlights the idiocy of poaching. Equipped with guns and plenty of ego, these men, and all others who poach, trek into nature with a feeling of invincibility unparalleled in nature. While, yes, humans have succeeded countless times at killing animals, there is no guarantee that they will succeed every time. Wild animals may not have had the same technological advancements as humans but they do have one thing that can never be taken from them – an instinct to survive.
This pride of lions attacked the way they would attack anyone – zebra, giraffe, rhino, human – it’s all the same to them. At the end of the day, it is simply someone trying to harm their family. The African lion is endangered due to rampant poaching and trophy hunting and may very well go extinct within our lifetime if something is not done. While this incident is tragic in that lives were lost, the fact is that had this gone “according to plan” lives would have still been lost, simply the other way around. What’s really tragic is that this whole ordeal could have been avoided if these men had respected the Parks and Wildlife Act and kept out of park. Instead, they will wait to appear in court where they face sentences of up to 25 years in jail and fines of up to $100,000. We hope that the deaths of these men are not in vain and that they at least serve as a spark that encourages poachers to ask themselves: is this all really worth it?
