College players staying out of FBS Bowl Games

I know that there are players in the past that have NFL chances who will refuse to play at a lower FBS Bowl Game to focus or heal for draft chances.
What do you guys think about this in the FBS and do you think we will see it trickle down to the FCS? If this becomes more and more prevalent do you think it will force the FBS to make more playoff type changes to keep big players playing "one more game"?
My opinion is I think in some cases it is very valid and a good choice for what is potentially going to decide some futures, there will be those that waste it or abuse it. I also think that the playoff setup FCS uses will eventually come into play for number of players drafted/free agent sign form each FBS and FCS. Mostly for the win or go home and the drive that teams/players need to show they can take the pros ,that they can play on Sunday in the playoffs in a high level to compete for a championship instead of getting a title shot because of votes.

I know fournette and mcaffrey are battling injuries. I also know they have an insurance plan that pays them $5 million if they're hurt enough to drop in the draft or unable to play at all. I get it but you couldn't hold me out of playing the last game of my college career.

I agree with this but when the coaches are getting paid millions, the university is making millions off your skills it might be easy to become jaded. The guaranteed money these guys would lose if they get injured and fall in the draft is a lot more than their insurance policy pays out. Ex. Jaylon Smith got his knee shredded in the bowl game last year, was top 10 pick but fell to second round after Jerrah decided to take a chance on him, it might have be a career ending injury where he wont be able to come back and get a second contract.

I don't have much of a problem with it...if they were in the final 4 I would but not one of these meaningless bowl games. Especially running backs, their window is generally pretty short to make money. Not to mention how much money they've already made for their schools...Let their backup get some game action in the exhibition bowl game to get ready for next year.

I was just reading an article last night - I think it was the ACC's commissioner makes 4.1 million a year. Just hard to believe they can justify the salaries.

Yeah it is crazy how much some of these universities make along with those that work for them. I do wonder as well about the term "student" athlete though. I know some are good players and know they are going for an education but you have those that their only plan is to play college ball and go pro and that is it with very few actually having a backup plan.

Star athletes like Fournette and Mcaffrey have paid their tuition many times over with the millions they have generated for the U. I'm not saying college athletes should be paid, but i don't have any problem with them sitting out some useless bowl game. One injury could cost them the one opportunity they have to finally cash in on decades of hard work.

one can look at it that way. but what about the guys that aren't on scholarship. looks pretty shitty in their eyes I'm sure.

I'm with eyexer, if they are healthy and decide to sit it out, they are forfeiting their scholarship by not being a part of the team.

Who the hell goes to a FBS level school on a scholarship with some thought of they won't have to play in a bowl game?

The way I see it, the NFL is getting away with a free developmental league, colleges and administrators are sharing a pot of money worth billions, and the tv networks are making billions. The only thing the kids can hope for is a lucrative professional career or utilize a free education. If they are first or second round talent, it only benefits them to skip some Tuesday at noon, pre Christmas bowl game. The rest of the kids can use that bowl game as either a going out party, or maybe get a scout or two to notice them.

another issue is years ago we didn't have this many bowl games, and a 6 and 6 school was never rewarded with playing in a 80,000 seat stadium filled with 5,000 'what the hell are we doing here' spectators.
