2nd captain of the Cornelia Marie from the Deadliest catch dies....

© Discovery Channel STURGIS, S.D. (AP) — Authorities say a man who has appeared as a ship captain on the Discovery Channel television program "Deadliest Catch" has died in Sturgis, South Dakota, during its famous motorcycle rally.

Meade County Sheriff Ron Merwin says he's waiting on autopsy results to help determine the cause of 50-year-old Tony Lara's death.

The sheriff says Lara died early Saturday morning at a private residence in Sturgis.

A message at a phone number associated with Lara wasn't immediately returned.

A post on the Discovery website describes Lara as a veteran crab catcher. He appeared on the show at the helm of a boat called the Cornelia Marie.

CAPTIONDiscovery
Sad news this morning: Phil Harris, captain of the Cornelia Marie fishing boat featured on Deadliest Catch, has died in Alaska. He was 53.

Harris suffered a massive stroke on Jan. 29 while the Cornelia Marie was in port at St. Paul Island, Alaska. The boat captain was flown to Anchorage for surgery.

"It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad - Captain Phil Harris. Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end," sons Josh and Jake Harris said in a statement on the Cornelia Marie site. "For us and the crew, he was someone who never backed down."

In a statement the network said, "Discovery mourns the loss of dear friend and colleague Captain Phil Harris. He was more than someone on our television screen. Phil was a devoted father and loyal friend to all who knew him. We will miss his straightforward honesty, wicked sense of humor and enormous heart. We share our tremendous sadness over this loss with the millions of viewers who followed Phil's every move. We send our thoughts and prayers to Phil's sons Josh and Jake and the Cornelia Marie crew."

I don't think taking care of themselves is even in the top ten on a lot of those guys' priority lists. Sad deal no matter what the case. I don't think they'd ever choose to take a slower path if given the opportunity to do it over again.

That guy hadn't been on in over 3 years. He drove the boat but calling him captain is a.stretch.

Those guys live hard, play hard, and die hard. I suspect that he would have chosen to go like he did or on the deck of a crab boat. My condolences to the family and friends.
