See, It's all about you and your herd. If I could get him to say publicly that it wouldn't benefit the deer herd but it would benefit 8814 other hunters would you forfeit your "privelage" to rifle hunt in return for a statewide bow hunt ? Google Sportsmanship.

Edit ,It would have gotten 8814 more people in the field . That's what it's all about, Share and enjoy.

I believe that is what was proposed but I could be wrong on that, I believe it would have put 8814 more hunters in the field in 2016. But I could be wrong. Chime in bckhnter and I'll also email NDGF to confirm what exactly was proposed. All I know is I feel there is some room for improvement. Some call it bitching and some call it standing up for what you think is right.

Under the previously suggested plan - yes if you applied for rifle/muzzleloader and got turned down - you could then buy the bow tag.

the 8814 number is not definite - that is the number of gratis tag holders and rifle hunters that also purchased a bow tag in 2016.

we cannot assume that all of them would have given up applying for their rifle tag. It would be anywhere from 0 more people to 8814 more people in 2016. We simply don’t know.

IMO I don’t believe it would have been that high.

Stop pitting one group against another. A lot of us hunt with all different weapons. We are not just bowhunters or rifle hunters. We like to hunt. Stop trying to eliminate opportunities for all to fit your agenda. GTFO and hunt!

I aint bullshitting anyone, If it's good enough for Dakota Country magazine Its good enough for me. Don't kill the messenger.

Since you've brought up the Dakota Country article at least 3 times now. I'd like to point out that it is an opinion piece from an author with an obvious agenda. He has no scientific data or game and fish support to back up his article. I bet if you asked Steinwand personally he would tell you it's strictly a social issue and changing it would mean very few licenses would be added to the rifle pool.

Davey seems to forget his own post(below)from Steinwand himself stating that the one tag system was a social issue. The opinion piece from professional victim Jim Fugile is more up Davey's alley though of course.

Thanks for taking the time to contact me on an issue that is evidently of great interest to you—deer hunting. It can definitely be an issue and especially for those that have not had a deer license for a number of years. You evidently remember the statewide meetings we held about four years ago on the concept of only one deer license per hunter. It definitely stirred some interest but if you attended any of the meetings we also stated it was a social issue and not a biological one. The biological portion is one we’ve been stressing and that’s having adequate habitat to support larger numbers of deer to meet the demand of ND hunters.

I have an idea on what to do with the deer license situation but I know a lot of people won't like it. I think that anyone in the age group of 12-17 yrs old should automatically get a rifle tag. The 12-13 yr olds get doe tags just like it is now and the 14-17 yr olds can get either a buck or doe. So after all them are taken care of everyone else puts in for a lottery for the remaining tags. We don't have enough kids hunting anymore and yes I know some of its due to the culture change but a lot has to do with not having an opportunity either. My wife and I just had our first child in April so it would be a long time till my kids could take advantage of that system but I would love to see more kids out hunting now.

Novel idea but it would never work. I can see guys putting non-hunting kids in to get the sure tag the same as alot of wives and grandmas draw tags nowadays. I also think you underestimate the number of kids in the lottery. I would bet there wouldn't be many tags leftover.

I think the current system for 11-14 year olds is great. I also think it's important for kids to realize early on that nothing in life is guaranteed and that it is seldom fair. Those that learn to adapt and work harder than everyone else are the ones that succeed. In todays world of instant gratification, I think it's important for parents to teach their kids that just being outdoors is 99% of the fun. Harvesting a buck or any deer for that matter is just a bonus. Getting into archery is pretty cheap now, I bought my son a bow that will fit him from 11 until he is out of high school, I think I had 4 different bows in that time. If you knock on enough doors, eventually you will find somebody that says yes. That doesn't mean it will be good enough ground to kill a deer every year, but at least they will be outside learning life long lessons. What good is it doing your kids to just sit back and bitch about not getting a rifle BUCK tag when you could easily get a rifle doe tag. Even if it's not in your home unit, make it an adventure and travel a 100 miles for a weekend. They will enjoy that a hell of a lot more than sitting on the couch with nothing because you think it's important they get a buck tag.

The only glitch in your plan is by starting them in bow hunting they will grow up expecting a guaranteed statewide any sex tag just like the present day bow hunters feel is their right.

That's where the whole learning to adapt to what's available comes into play. Would you rather them learn that it's ok to take opportunity from others because you're unwilling to adapt?

However - the archery tags are not a contributing factor in the management of the deer herd as of this time. With that said, it can remain as it is until it does become a factor.

I want a pool of 100 state-wide whitetail buck tags created. $200 NON-REFUNDABLE to apply for the 100 state-wide tags.

While we're at it, 10 state-wide mule-deer buck tags @ $500 NON-REFUNDABLE to apply.

After being a part of this topic I need help on this one tag as to how this helps out other than a person not being able to harvest more than one deer.
So if I apply for a rifle or muzzle and get turn down I then can get a bow tag.

For me I am not willing to risk only to be able to hunt for a short period of time and not get a bow tag for December hunting so I will not sent in a app for muzzle or mule deer. Love to just drive a few miles and sit, watch and now and then take a bow with me. So there is two less apps sent in. Not a meat hunter (beef).

But only so many tags and most will still apply for the rifle and muzzle tag and if you get then the only result is one will not then get a bow tag. So less bow tags out there and I really do not see those less bow tags having any effect on the deer population.
Game and fish is deciding on the number of tags based on something so that is what one has to work with. It does not matter who gets one as it does not matter who shoots the deer but only how many are shot.

It still seem to me this is all driven by assholes that bag about their 2 or three buck tags and some want to end that as that is not fair. Life is never fair. Again game and fish has said this many tags can be issue. I guess we get rid of the guy with two or three tags but how many are there?
I hunted deer since 59. All rifle until 96. Found a bow and the rifle other than three times mule deer hunting has hung on the wall.

Overall in my life we have bigger problems with rules being broken. Rifle kills with bow tags, gratis tags with its abuse, tags for non-hunting family members, shooting multiple deer as up here that is a way of life, no license and still hunting, last year a guy told me he had at that time five bucks and had no problem telling that to a group of people. So much of that with no enforcement. Little by us hunters of enforcement.

Other than the word fair I fail to understand. db

If everybody adapted to bow hunting as you propose what would be the end result? The fact is we have a limited number of deer in the state to get the highest number of individual hunters in the field a one tag per person system would accomplish that goal.

Why stop there, why not just auction every tag off to the highest bidder?

I'd say eliminate rifle and muzzy hunting altogether then. Everyone can get an OTC bow tag, everyone can hunt and our deer population will continue to expand since success rates will be less then with rifles. You should be all for that, right?
