We had a tough trip this weekend too. Set my house on the west end of the lake in 12 FOW the previous weekend with some OK results (lots of marked fish, landed 15 or so eaters)...This weekend we had more guys and a good spread of tipups and only landed a handful and did not have nearly as many marks. Explored a flooded bridge on Alice midday and didn't do well. Too cold to move the permanent. Had some friends in Creel with similar results. Bad weekend to be on the big devil.

Also - Lots of unmarked spearing holes in some back bays near the highway. Leaving giant blocks of ice on top of the frozen lake is not the proper way to mark a spear hole. Be careful out there.

Same here, gonna try the whole west side if that's what it takes. Bringing the hard side for sleeping but run and gun with a portable. Hope this weekend is better than last. Should be warmer by the looks of it.

Yeah no kidding. It seemed like everything we did something broke. We would've loved to be portable and move around but as cold as it was getting stranded somewhere with broken equipment didn't sound smart.

Do you bend any auger bits doing this? I know with my luck it would happen.

First time I ever fished Devils lake, we decided to try spearing in some timber. Drilled and cut a nice hole, and once we got in we noticed I missed a dead head with the auger by 3-4". Probably would've ended our trip.

In the timber it might work to shovel off the snow, then pour some water on the ice where you want to drill. Might be able to see if there are any trees in your way.

1st and foremost, I’m a cruddy ice fisherman. No fish and broken shit is my typical cold-snap Sub-zero fishing trip results.

This time of winter tends to be tough everywhere, February is the time to head to the mountains or a beach for a week or two.

The 100 plus guides running around DL this year pretty much pound spots until there is nothing left and continue to roam and do that. Wish there would be a limit on the number of them.

Fishing guides are the best especially if they are driving a snobear, with my trusty vortex diamondbacks I can see a snobear from atleast a mile away. Never have to clean out slush from the holes usually have multiple choices to pick from no need to pull out the auger. Also I have a nice semi groomed trail so I don't have to put my truck into four wheel drive. This is the new way to ice pirate I can spend all day just driving around following behind a snobear :icegif:
