Finding dead ones this week laying in the creeks while harvesting. A person can't catch a break, I don't remember it being like this when I was a kid. Now it's every 2 or 3 years, pisses a person off. And we are WEEKS away from a hard frost, it's going to be brutal!

DAMN IT!!!! When is the GnF going to address this real threat to the deer herd? Drought sucks. Should have seen this coming. My day is officially ruined. Please keep us posted on your findings 5575. I'm going to go sniffing out here as well. GRRRRR!!

I literally had this conversation with a buddy yesterday. Said with the rampant drought again, I was just waiting for the first EHD news.

I'm going to say it because it needs to be said: We need more habitat and we need wetlands. Things aren't getting better if we do nothing. They certainly appear to be getting worse, though.

That is all.

Yep, I would be perfectly OK with a hard freeze any day now. Not that it looks like it's going to happen, but that's really the only reasonable killer of the midges.

They just put this out yesterday here

STATE WITHDRAWS LICENSES BECAUSE OF EHD OUTBREAK
South Dakota is already changing deer hunting regulations because of an ongoing hemorrhagic disease outbreak. South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks says it is receiving reports of EHD and blue tongue in deer at varying levels across the state, and the agency is using reports of dead deer to determine which areas are being hit hardest.
So far, 62 licenses are being removed from the fourth combined deer draw. That includes 60 licenses in West River unit 24A13 and 2 licenses in East River unit 47A13. Hunters in heavily impacted areas may also be able to return their licenses and receive a full refund along with their preference point being reinstated.

Dont know about deer but the MN DNR used to get with Bear Guides along with knowing where larger populations of bears are and put Mineral blocks treated with Anti-tic chemicals and other diseases out in the Spring and continued all summer long. Weird they have no answer for EHD or CWD

Slappy,

Thanks for the EHD link to North American Whitetail.....Interesting read.

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see anything in the article that mentioned garlic.

Did some further reading and sounds relatively common to add garlic or sulphur to cattle feed at sufficient rate to create a body odor which deters biting insects.

Seems like it could be effective on a captive deer population but dubious on wild deer herd. To create and maintain body odor deterrent would require frequent or constant feeding on garlic-infused feed or minerals. Garlic/sulphur concentration has to be high enough to have an impact without being so strong as to make unappealing to wild deer with other food options. One might smell like an Indian trucker within a few hours after a visit to the Clay Oven lunch buffet but that is resolved by the following day.

As the root cause is cattle which are much more feasible to manage, treating cattle is likely a better bet.

How does garlic stop midges?
The deer lick the garlic blocks and eventually the smell of garlic repels the flies, mosquitoes, and midges.

I've used garlic mineral for my cows for a few years. While I think it helps a little, it doesn't do enough.
