Just wondering what everyone thinks about these fishing piers that were put in in some lakes.
I know you boat fisherman can give a rats butt about them, but the shore fisherman use them.

Are they put in just for looks? Or did they put them at that particular spots cuz there's fish there? Which in my opinion there isn't, so why put it in a place where they know you ain't gonna catch squat off the pier.

I know they are trying to put them in so you have better access to the water.

Whats you think boys?

I think they're good thing. Some lakes don't have nice shores for fishing. Plus it lets disabled folks fish. I can think of way worse things to spend tax dollars on.

You talking the metal ones or the rock jetty type? Most of the metal ones I've seen are in decent ares. There location tends to be more about proximity to parking areas for vehicles. The rock jetty type become their own fish draw so its a fairly decent setup.

The ones on Ashtabula are a very good thing and there are lots of fish to be had where they are put. Not just bullheads either. Most of the other ones are in pretty good spots and I see bunches of kids and folks that can't rock hop anymore really have a good time on them. That is one of the very worthwhile endeavors that wildlife clubs can get involved with that will produce benefits right away.

When bringing kids out they are very handy. Access for shore fishing is almost always a good thing, especially when it's so frowned upon by the COE on the big lake.

I miss being able to drive down to the beach and water on the big lake when I was younger, now its a 2-3 mile walk to the same place I use to drive up to the water.

I've had good luck fishing from the piers. I'm sure location is more dependent on land availability vs fishing quality. Imy sure most in some way attract fish.

The lack of catching fish may not necessarily be the pier placement!

There is one on a small pond in South Bismarck, that's heavily used, and typically people on it are successful. I thoroughly enjoy being able to take my kids fishing without bringing back 200 lbs of mud on each excursion.

I miss the days when a fishing "dock" didn't have to have rails because there was a .01% chance that some moron might fall into the water. I don't dock fish much now but I did at one time and would have hated working around them stinking rails. Maybe they could put rails on half the dock and leave the other side of the doc without and then just post signs. The sign on the rail free side could read "Responsible, normal people" and on the railed side: "Morons".

Yep. Not sure about sak but the corp signs on oahe say nothing about driving out. Only takes a short time before a trail gets used enough that it would qualify as an established trail by ND stanards. I sure they are rule against it since they have rules about everything but enforcing it would be difficult. Hell some of the tails are used so much that Google earth list temperature like this one at cattail.

So Devils Lake chamber of commerce last year was talked about putting up some fishing piers for handicap accessible. The piers would be great for a lot of fisherman since you have to walk down 8' of rip rap just to fish, also with all the old berms around the shoreline, it is going to get harder and harder to fish these shorelines. I hope they allow atvs on the old 281 road this summer.

Unless they designate these piers HANDICAP ONLY, A wheel chair fisherman would probably NEVER be able to use ANY fishing pier on DL without first chopping your way through the 100 or more Hmong crowded onto the thing. Not that I have anything against'em, but that's just the reality of what will happen IMO, based on what has happened to myself and most other DL shore fishermen I've talked to.

Up here the Corps no driving signs have turned into fences and padlocked gates. There is a point up here named for a guy who wished it most days for longer than I have been alive. Sad to think that if he were still alive he would have to haul his gear over a half mile to get to that spot. Kinda cuts out a lot of opportunity for a lot of folks for no real reason. There wasn't problems in these places to begin with. A half mile isn't much for many of us just to fish but it is for many others, and forget about keeping a few pike for instance. Maybe guys should get into the business of training dogs to pull a travois so they can get out and get some fish for the frying pan.

I know some people have had problems sconis, blue platers, or hmongs but to tell you the truth majority of these people respect others. Most times all you need is to ask them for some space, which most will gladly give. I have even given white bass for walleye when fishing next to them (note only keeping only my daily possession). I just hope to see what happens with a proposal for a fishing piers.

Breaking the law. Party fishing is illegal.

Big J, that is one of the laws with many gray areas. When hunting we always hunted with family members if you stood point for driving out deer,or fishing in a boat with four people there is only one live well. I have been fishing on shore with a floating fishing basket with more than one possession limit inside, got checked by a game warden. The game warden didn't say anything to me or the person who had fish in the basket. Does anyone have a experience where they were cited for party fishing?
