My wife and I are hashing out ideas and right now I have a 2013 F-150 Lariet V8 ... she wants to trade it in but wants more room since our family is growing :) and asked me what I though about an expedition. She found a 2016 Ford expedition for about the same price we paid for the pickup I have right now brand new 4 years ago.

How are the expeditions for towing a boat... driving through snow trying to get to the lake to going ice fishing.... gas mileage???

Pro's

Con's??

Like to hear all opinions ...

I had a suburban and down sized to an Expedition…then talked the wife into driving it so I could get a ½ ton pickup … obviously you lose your pick-up box hauling large items, wood, junk things like that…of course a good 5x8 trailer or bigger can remedy that just a little bit more of a pain…I believe the Expeditions still have the 5.4L so same motor that was in the old F-150’s it’s a gas hog but fine for towing…the higher end Expedtions like the limited have independent rear suspension and are a much smoother ride than a pick up … with good tires they handle snow just fine….might loose a little ground clearance from the pick-up but all in all a good vehicle

they're awesome for all that. I would suspect pretty close to the same mileage possibly slightly less since it's a little heavier

IMO, the family comes first and all my "play time" activities are way way way down the line of importance. Get what the family needs and "make do" when you want to go fishing. A truck never has been and never will be a "Family" oriented vehicle. Good Luck!!!

Agreed. Crew cab with a topper if you have 3 kids or less. It will hold value considerably better as well.

P.S. Get the flip open side windows on the topper.

How can a 4 full size door pickup with a topper not be a family oriented vehicle? (unless you have more than 3 kids ?)

We have two kids and the wife has a tahoe and we take my F250 with a topper on it on 99% of our family trips

unless you have a F250 or similar tall pickup. Cant reach the stuff inside anyways and on alot of toppers you loose the sliding windows so you can get the dogs some air when its warm

I have sliding windows and flip sides. Grow up or get a step stool.

My dog rides cool and I can reach all my stuff.

I had an 02 suburban that I beat the shit out of and didnt care what I put in it (dead animals, gas tanks, mulch, etc.) since I had a heavy duty mat that covered the whole cargo area. If I had a brand new SUV I wouldnt do that though. I now have an f150 w/ 6.5 box and a topper and love it. However, If you have more than 3 kids you may need to go to the suv.

Given the same tire size and construction an SUV counterpart to a 1/2 ton pickup (Tahoe/Suburban, Expedition/EX, Sequoia, Armada) will run through deep snow better and be more stable on the really slick stuff. Little to no wheel hopping in an SUV compared to a pickup. The better balance of weight distributed over the whole vehicle makes them more stable on the really slick stuff too, you don't have that "loose/light" pickup back end.

Suburban/Tahoe, Expedition/EX, Armada, and Sequoia are all essentially 1/2 ton SUV's. They all share drivetrains with their 1/2 ton pickup counterpart. The only real disadvantage to towing with the SUV is the shorter wheel base makes for a potentially rougher ride, and @ the upper limit of their rating that short wheelbase can make things squirrely if you're not careful, but some of the upper end models have on-board air-ride/load leveling that essentially negates that detriment as well.

An Aluminum Excursion with solid axles, Ford's new 10-spd tranny, leather seats and rubber floors/cargo area would make an awful nice family hauler/hunting rig. Alas there is no such critter save having one custom built.

Keep the pickup, add a topper with side windows. You can send your kids into the box to get stuff. I'm 34 and my Old Man still sends me into the pickup box to get things. Buy your wife a minivan.

Buy your wife a minivan.

They're not cool, but they're a LOT more "Utility" than is a "Sport Utility". Dad had 6-7 AWD mini-vans from '94-'06 GMs and Dodges. They go places you wouldn't expect and are exceptionally stable on slickery stuff, they ONLY things they lack are clearance, but, that's what makes them so stable on the slick and towing capacity.

As I mentioned I drive an f150 w/ a topper but a few years ago my wife went from a mini van to a chevy traverse. I would rather have something larger like a suburban for her but the traverse is a nice size since she gets very nervous driving larger vehicles in tight parking lots and where she works parking is a concern. Over all I do like the traverse as it pulls our pop up camper well and the rear seat flip up if we need to haul extra kids. It also handles really well on ice/snow. not big enough to pull the boat but thats why I have my truck. The minivan was nice when the kids were in car seats but we live out in the country and I was getting tired of her always getting stuck so went to an AWD.

It just depends on what you are using it for…yes a pick-up can be a family vehicle…but to me a pick up is a pick-up hauling, hunting flying down dirt roads…where a full size SUV is more of a family hauler…plus most have more family friendly options in 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] and third row seating…while most pick-up have exceptional 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] row space … when hauling kids/friends/family ect… sometimes it’s nice to have that 7 or 8 person capacity….a full size SUV will handle “normal” towing and off roading and generally provide a better ride

I drive a 2014 f150 eco boost wife has a 2011 expedition el 5.4 limited and she likes driving my pickup better than here expedition they handle a lot different. We are also looking into getting her a different vehicle. we have been tossing around the pickup but losing the rear seat would stink when you need to haul more than 5, we have 3 kids. winter time everything you put in the back of the pickup gets frozen which not really a big deal, but the dust under the topper or box cover is not very sweet either. mileage is better with my pickup than her expedition. she gets about 16 going down the highway but around 10 in town. my 2 cents

I have both an F-150 (1999) and an Expedition (2000) and I love them both even though they are older. I prefer to drive the expedition and pretty much only drive the F-150 when I need a pickup. My pickup pulls my fifth wheel camper and my expedition pulls my boat for weekend trips. They both have a 5.4 and the same transmission and rear end. I think the expedition has more power and handles better but I guess it has less miles and hasn't pulled as much over the years as my pickup. I'm not sure about the newer models but if they are as good as my old reliable ones you can't go wrong. I've had my pickup since 2003 and haven't hardly had to do anything to it. Best vehicle I've ever owned and I've owned a lot of them over the years.
