My opener decided to crumple the garage door because it got bound up when trying to close. The top panel is bent along with the top support bar. The door won't even close manually with out beating on it.

Any good repair ideas or should I just call a pro?

depending on the door and it's age you can buy replacement panels. If it's more than one panel it's just as cheap to buy a whole new door.

You might want to check the down pressure setting on your door opener as well. Sounds like it might be set pretty heavy if it bent up your door without kicking out.

If it can be fixed with just a new panel that shouldn't be to hard to do yourself. Straightening a panel I don't think will be very successful if it's bent so bad it won't close. I'm also guessing that if it jammed on the way down to the point where it bent, there's more wrong than just a bent panel.

Does it have torsion springs or extension spring. If they are torsion it's possible one of the springs (if there are 2) is broke or lost it's tension.

It literally bent the connecting arm in half. You know now that I think about it the torsion spring didn't seem to be working so maybe that went out.

Sounds like I don't need to mess with it so I'll call a pro. Anyone have recommendations?

Might as well go with a double steel sided door while I'm upgrading.

Last summer someone backed their boat motor into my garage door. Made a mess of one panel. Priced buying a replacement panel.....you might as well pay the extra $50 and get a whole new door. What a crock.

Even if the rest of your garage is not insulated I would recommend an insulated door. In my experience they are so much smoother operating.

Magic City Garage Door or Overhead Door. The downward tension setting needs to be adjusted a LOT lighter. Something is wrong that the door that it is binding on the way down.

Now I got the dilemma of going with windows or not on the new door. Is it worth the extra $500? Will this add to the curb appeal as I don't plan to live in this house forever?

Windows at the top of door are fantastic for extra light . High enough so people can't snoop

Just had my garage door replaced on Wednesday. The old 1971 door finally rotted out. Had “the door guys” install it as I know a couple of them. Had the top window panel installed because of the light transmission. Wife wanted it as the third panel so the dog could watch passerby’s. I let the company take the fall for that decision and just shrugged my shoulders as the wife voiced her displeasure. 7x16 door with window panel, double steel and insulated was $1800.

We have windows in the top panel on both doors too. I had Tommy @ Sunlight Solutions come over and put dark tint on them also as they face the south. Really helped to keep the heat down in the summer.

I used him also. Did a pretty good job. I like that the film not only has the darkness, but also the reflection for security.
