whomever built my house back in the early 70's was ahead of the times. Detached oversized double measures 28x32. Unfortunately, I'm held hostage to a 7' door.

If any of you plan on buying property of an acre of more, considering building a pole barn/shop, and go at atleast 50x100 with 16 ft walls, you won't regret it.

This Thumbs Up. Luckily where i live now came with a 50X100 Quonset. Love being able to literally be able to park everything inside and out of the elements. Hopping some day will build a smaller headed shop connected to the house also.

Im in the same situation as you. Wife found a house she wanted but it only had a 1.5 stall attached garage. I agreed under one condition. I build the garage I wanted. I even went as far as getting my lot surveyed to ensure I could I could push it to the legal property boundaries. Long story short is a 36x28 heated insulated garage. If I could've gone wider, I would've. I just did not want to build over sewer line. My biggest mistake? 7' garage doors....

Dad's shop is going up now. 40x68 with 9 foot sidewall, 2x6 construction. Front 40x40 has scissor truss so he gets about 13.5 feet of height in the center of the shop. Back portion of shop is 28x40, again 9 foot sidewall with flat rafter which will be a 2 bed/1 bath living quarters. The large windows on the side of shop are 4x5 ft. and will allow some awesome natural light in. I will post some photos later on when it is completed. Super happy with the build so far though!
