What are people doing to store their boats and campers. It seems most houses do not have garages deep enough for a boat let alone a guys pickup anymore. Also, most lots do not have room for a camper pad. Are most people building to meet these demands?

My garage is deep enough but the door isnt wide enough. I'd have put in through the double door but then would have to swing it over. Didn't think of that when I built as it did fit my old boat. I do have the parking pad but I live in a rural subdivision. I have a storage unit I store the boat in the winter.

My boat sits in the barn in the winter and next to my garage all summer but i dont have a little pecker sparkle boat. The camper has a pad for the summer and gets put in the pasture for winter.

Three story house = bigger garage.

Wish that was the case but It seems like even the bigger houses for sale on 2 acre lots are cutting back on garage sizes. I have only found a couple houses under 400K that have garages deeper than 24ft. And by a couple I mean 3. Went and looked at a house on 2 acres with 2 master bedrooms but it had a 3 stall garage that was under 19 feet deep with garage doors to short to park a truck in. Did not make much sense to me.

I think around Bismarck the width and height of the garage doors is more of a problem. To many 9x7 doors on the third stall, it fits my smaller river boat fine but don’t think I’d get a 20’ windshield boat through the door. For some reason a lot of builders seem to set the third stall back a little bit to make the front of the house look better which cost me 2'. My third stall is 24' but my main double is 26’ deep and has an 18’ main door which is nice. I think most newer homes around Bismarck also have plenty of room for a camper pad, I see them everywhere and definitely have enough room myself. My house is just a pretty standard 10 year old split level.

we will b building a shophouse in a year or 2... 50x100 red iron steel building with 50x50 designated for 2 story house, and 50x50 for shop/garage... i'll b able to pull my short box crew cab truck and my 19' boat in 1 side, leave it hooked up, and drive out the other side (doors on both sides)... that will still leave me 50x40 left in the garage, and 5000 sf of house... can go with 14' high doors with a 16' roof...

When looking for a place down here in Payson we could find a house but not a big enough garage or room to add on to a garage.
So we ended up building and our garage is nice sized.
Went 24' deep by 21' wide on the double stall side with 18' wide x 10' high door and should have gone 26'-28' deep but couldn't on account of zoning. On the third stall side it is 18' wide by 40' long with a 14' wide by 10' high door on the front side and a 12' wide by 10' high door on the back. Have a big slab out back so we can drive through. Also on the side of the garage i have a 12' wide by 60' long slab for parking of the enclosed trailers if i want to leave them out.
We sold our dually and 5th wheel toy hauler so just have the car, pickup, trike, and General. Had Garage Logic in bismarck come down and put in the same cabinets that we had in Bismarck and also their Hy-lofts upper storage that hang from the ceiling. Wouldn't have a garage without those 2 items! Check them out in Bismarck and ask for Darin. Great guy!
One thing with a garage and storage, you will find it is never big enough!
Good luck!

I've seen a few bump outs in my day around the city. Contractor cut a hole in the back of the garage and added enough room for the boat motor to fit in before the back of the boat touched the walls. Looks a little tacky but what ya gonna do in a pinch.

Garages suck.

My wife and I hope to build in 2-3 years. I plan on the 3rd stall being 60 long, doors on both ends with a 12 foot door. The other 2 stalls 28-32 ft deep. I will also put a garden shed out back for the dirty garden equipment, off season ice fishing storage, etc. I hope the house will have a few bathrooms and a kitchen.

Sorry to derail, but does anyone know of a good on-line program to do some basic drawings/layouts to take to a builder or architect so we can have a slight jump start of the whole process? I don't need anything so in depth it includes HVAC, ELEC, etc. Just basic layouts to scale.

i use excell, or the google spreadsheet program and just format the boxes to square and use borders and shading... 1 box = 1' - brown are cabinets - blue is tub - black is toilet - grey is washer and dryer type stuff... very easy...

15X18 Master
boxes didn't paste...

when I built homes I did a minimum of 10' wide doors and 10' high doors. Tried to do garages at 28' minimum 30' preferred.

Analog green squared paper, you don't need any fancy digital stuff. (grin)

my Lund Pro angler 16 (88" Beam) sitting on a heavy duty trailer is 9' 3" wide. won't go in my 9'wide door.

If any of you plan on buying property of an acre of more, considering building a pole barn/shop, and go at atleast 50x100 with 16 ft walls, you won't regret it.

I was under the impression that trailers couldn't be more than 102"? Even all the biggest baddest fiberglass boats all sit on 102" trailers. Are you sure your door isnt 8' and trailer 8'3" wide?

I built a house out in Lincoln last year and the original design was a 2 stall garage 19ft4in deep X 21ft8in wide. I added 7 extra ft in depth and a third stall for 30ft wide by 26ft deep on double and 24ft deep on single with the with the bump out for the single losing the 2ft discussed above. I wish I would have gone 2-3ft wider on each side of the garage but didn't think of it at the time, but was happy I was getting a 3 stall garage. As stated above you will never have enough garage space. I did put a parking pad on right away, was going to go 10-12 ft wide on that and the concrete contractor said might as well go out to property line so if you get a camper or sell you can back a camper in without being so close to roof, so went the full 14 wide to property line. I also extended it back into the cut out behind the single garage and up to the house for an extra 18x24 ft cement pad area off back garage door, happy I did that also. I put in taller doors, I believe 9ft high instead of standard 8ft on there plans. My first house I have had built and or owned for learned a few things. but probably wont have another built unless I win the lottery. Overall happy with what I got. in the next year or two plan on putting in a shed in the back for off season items. dukgnfsn
