Generator Etiquette

So what do you guys think when someone runs a generator in the middle of a crowd on the ice or in a nice quiet campground? When I fish or camp, I am very conscious of others around me and will do all I can to not let my activities impact or affect them. My way of thinking is that others come out to enjoy the outdoors in their particular way and it would be rude of me to interfere with that. So just as I stay out of their space physically, I don't invade their space with my noise either. Am I in the minority in thinking this way?

Ice: If you set up in a "village" you absolutely have to expect noise and interruption pretty much any time, day or night. If you're all by yourself and someone decides to pull up next to you and start blaring their noisemaker (generator, music, etc) I'd say you have a legitimate gripe and at a minimum have the right to POLITELY ask them to reduce the noise.

Campground: If it's after 9:00pm @ night or before 8:00AM, again, I'd say you have a legitimate gripe. If it's after 8:00am and before 9:00PM, it's to be expected.

I must officially be an old fart now cause I find that to be sad. I guess I can now start talking about the good ole days when campgrounds were quiet the whole day. At least they are making generators quieter and quieter.....hopefully that continues.

I agree with sdmf but most camp grounds have electricity now so generator not a problem. A PSA if you get a camp spot by the play park kids are loud. Had a lady come chew out a group of kids in middle of the day for making to much noise. They proceeded to make more and have fun.

You poor old bastard, I bet you're apoplectic when you're young neighbor has to snow-blow the driveway before 7:00AM so that he and momma can get to work. I hope you own a canoe and not one of those noisy stinky gasoline powered marine motors so you're not the cause of bother to those who want peace and quiet on the water. Are generators so much different than lawn mowers?

Maybe 10 or more years ago, the ex and I were camping up at Indian Hills with another couple. There was someone who had a big house boat in the parking lot with a diesel generator (if I remember correctly it was a diesel) and had it running all day to supply juice to the boat (AC, I think). Anyway, it was a loud SOB and we were camped hundreds of yds away in the primitive area. Sometime well after 11 PM the damn thing either finally ran out of fuel or he shut it off.

Fella we were camping with yelled out at the top of his lungs "thank you ASSSS....HOLE!".

A round of cheers sprung up from around the whole of Indian Hills. More for my friend's audible appreciation than the initial shutdown of the generator.

Two years ago I was out on the lake with the gf. Fishing was slow so she wanted to watch a movie. I drug the generator about 10 feet from the neighbors pop up and let it rip. Two guys came out of the house and threatened to kick my ass. The cord on my generator is only 25' long and I had to take it around the other side of the house to plug it in. I sure didn't think I was being disrepectful.

If I'm fishing open water, the fewer jet skis I see the better. Same applies to the ice and snowmobiles. But in this day and age you are not escaping the generator. Best just to buy one yourself, and hang a tv in the permanent, or bring ear plugs. Stereos are bullshit no matter the occasion or location. I don't want hear your favorite redneck rock on the lake, while camping, or at home. You have shitty taste in music and deserve to have ears drums scrambled by a rusty drill bit.

If you are camping in a campground that allows trailers and 5th wheelers, expect to hear generators during the day. The same probably applies to ice fishing out of a portable around permanents. Quiet hours are from 8 pm to 10 am where we camp in a state park on the coast of northern California.

In the summer we live at our cabin on Lake Metigoshe. The 2 most popular watercraft on the lake are pontoons and jet skis. Pontoons - no problem. But jet skis/skiers that just want to cut up the water in front of our cabin and the noise that they make really get my goat. If someone wants to cut up the water fine, do it in front of your own cabin or in front of all of the undeveloped property on the lake or at least way out in the middle of the lake. I've considered writing a letter to the editor of the 2 local, weekly papers expressing my opinion, but have just sucked it up so far and refrained for the time being.
