Is a range finder a must? Kinda hard to judge distance in the dark without isn't it? Just debating other cheaper options with 640 res without range

Yeah, it's tough to tell distance with a thermal. I killed a lot of coyotes without it over the last couple years, but getting an LRF is one of the main reasons I upgraded.

I ranged a bunch of stuff at night and we guessed before and were way off. One of the reasons i went with the 384 with range finder and ballistic computer. If i out grow this one i will sell it and up grade but think it will do just fine for a while.

ok last question...thoughts on hanging one on an AR 223 vs a 22 arc bolt?
I assume you already own these. I would go with the 22 ARC. The couple hundred FPS it adds over the 223 makes a big difference.
To avoid wandering all over in the dark looking for them, you want the flattest shooting, hardest hitting thing that is still pleasant to shoot. 22 Creedmoor, 22-250, or 6 Creedmoor (in that order) is my preference.
For sure 223s have and will continue to kill many coyotes just fine, but I find it... lacking.

You can sight it in for both as it will save multiple profiles and see which one you like better. I have it on an ar i had one with out a scope. I am much more accurate with a bolt gun do to inexperience with shooting the gas gun much. Going down another rabbit hole i really dont need to but looking at turning it into a 22 arc maybe

Having LRF in either the scope or handheld scanner is a giant help. You don’t need it in both but I’d strong suggest you at least have one or the other.
