Ice fishing by December?

The foreçast for December is pretty much just like November. Most likely you better get the boat ready. Two words.

El Nino.

If you haven't noticed already the temps are very mild and dry.

Never put the boat away

wlyhntr, I'm with you on this one. Jan 1 fishing the river in a boat on the last El Nino 55 degrees. River froze over in late Jan for one week was fishing the river by March 1. fun year that one. This El Nino is warmer then that one.

I see nothing wrong with fishing the river in December or January. Done it before and it was great.

Anyone make it out today? I checked a few lakes ice conditions well out hunting and found it to be extremely variable. One lake only had two inches of the slush ice that formed a week ago well another only two miles away had five to six inches of clear blue ice. Knew that the slush ice was not going to be a good thing but wouldn't have thought it would be lagging this far behind. Hope it was just an anomaly to that spot but will have me on gaurd more then usual the first couple times out.

Walked out on Patterson Lake this morning, seemed pretty solid and clear. Didn't go far, didn't want to get winded.

Hopefully they have not reproduced and never will. Most all sane people are nervous to walk out right now and numbnuts trys to drive out! On a side note does anyone know why bond lake in kidder county is no longer listed on the lake reports or the stocking list. Just wondering if it winter killed or if the farmer who owns the land around it got pissed. It was a new lake stocked in 10 and I never fished it due to to much snows on the section line road but was one I was thinking of checking out.

My northernmost location overlooks the river where the channel vanishes into the mud flats and from the tank battery I can see almost to Lewis and Clark SP, river channel is frozen and the lake as far as I can see has ice on it, a few small pockets of open water here and there. Maybe Tobacco Garden will be good in a couple weeks...

Walked out on the local lake yesterday afternoon. Had 4-5" of good clear ice. Left with 6 walleye between the 4 of us. The fish were really healthy.
