Well, something Ive dreaded finally happened this evening. My 2 year old golden finally met up with her first porcupine…. She got it pretty good on the front paws and neck. Thank god she didn’t get any on her face or mouth. I had to carry her back to the truck. She’s pretty submissive and mild tempered so we were able to pull a lot out in the field and in the ride home. I got almost all of them out but there’s still maybe 5-6 on her front paw that she won’t let me touch. Anyone have any experience or suggestions on how to get her calmed down enough to help her. Im trying to avoid any major vet bills at this point as Im pretty confident Ive gotten most of them, even the hard to see broken off ones. Maybe 40-60 pulled out so far……. I pumped 3 rounds of 2 shot into that fat son of bitch so he won’t be hurting anything ever again.

Cold water from a water hose and needle nose pliers . Gotta break her spirit and show you who is boss. I had a mutt that couldn't resist a mouth full of quills.

I have been on that train of killing them all since my first dog got into one 20 years ago I hate them.

You might have to be the one holding her and some one else pull them my dog wouldn’t let my uncle hold him but he would me. I would talk to the vet maybe get an antibiotic to prevent any infection if you miss any.

She definitely knows who the boss is and was solid so far with the other leg/chest area but this last leg she’s being really protective of .im thankful she had her vest on as I think the breast blate helped deflect a lot of them. I’ve got her on benedryll and some anxiety meds and she still won’t let me do what I need to. I hate to do it but tomorrow I may need to get a muzzle and manhandle her. She’s only about 50lbs so I’m not worried about handling her but a snip or two at le might make things a lot worse for her.

I used to give them a pass most of the time as they weren’t bothering me………I thought we had an understanding….. not anymore. I’ll kill every last one of them useless pieces of shit now. Babies and all. Im out for blood, they started a war.

Gosh this is a nightmarish situation, went thru this quill issue once hopefully never again.

I did the field medic quill removal only to find out month's later the tip of quill break off and caused infection later, vet told me these tiny pieces can work they're way into lungs over time from (body shots) from everday activities and create a real nightmare.

He also recommended for field quill extraction is to snip quill in half with sissor, never tried it as this was a one time experience in 50 yrs thankfully.

Nab yourself a needle-driver w/scissors behind the driver jaws, they're about $20:

Needle Driver w/Scissors

The important Porkie will be the next one your dog encounters. Generally speaking there's 2 responses:

1. The dog will avoid them at all costs
2. The dog will voraciously attack every last one it can find

You won't know until you know.

Amen! Hate them b@astards. Not to mention them suckers are hard on trees as well. Usually one of us in our group ends up with a ER vet bill due to a porcupine each hunting season. this year it was my uncle. Killed 3 of them sob's in the same walk, but not after the new pup learned what them nasty suckers are. Removed 30+ in the field with a leatheman and two of us wrestling the pup, but the ones in the mouth we couldnt get.

Never ran across one when I had my Black Lab thank God. I would do the vet, can't put a price on your best friend/hunting partner. They may find something you miss / overlook.

They are pretty passive, if a dog gets stuck, its usually the dogs fault. its a nightmare to deal with though, 100%, id take skunk spray any time over quills. They are kinda cute little bastards though...

Definitely one of those deals where it's hard to blame either of the two involved - both doing what nature intended.

Was the porky out in the open/prairie/field - or in a tree filled coulee?
