Ok give me some thoughts.
First I think cool temperatures make powder burn at a lower rate. Barrels 22 inches long don't get advertised velocities, and they drop 100 to 200 fps from your handloads. I think when cold slows you powder a longer barrel will burn all of it. At 68° my 6.5x284 with a 140 VLD gives me 3036 fps. Today at 37° this morning I got 3036 average fps. In warm weather my 6.5 PRC and 6.5x284 are twins, but if it's cool the 26 inch barrel walks all over the 24 inch PRC.

I can't believe I got the same velocity with the temperature change.

Regarding velocity and bbl length, nothing matters except the number your chrono spits out.

Regarding temp sensitivity/insensitivity, there’s no ā€œeasyā€ way to know. Gotta pick the condition you have a question about, wait for it, shoot/chrono, and log the data where you can reference back to it.

^^^^This seems to validate my crude method of grouping wherein I allow the bbl to cool to ambient temperature between shots. The first and most important shot is sent through a "cold" bbl.

Within my ignorance and factory loads; a "true" group isn't possible above 40F for exact shot placement during "Gun Season":

If y'all are pushing fields like driven British pheasant; y'all be better served with shotgun slugs and/or .44 Mag leverguns; instead of a "telephone pole" "sniper rifle" with a big fucking scope.

IMHO/That is all.

Waiting on the sunrise..this crazy wind isn't helping matters, nice being out of it in this box blind today though that's for sure! The crashing of trees throughout the day yesterday was a bit unsettling. Could really use some colder Temps and snow. Pays to be elevated, even getting some sketchy cell service, nice on these all day sits.😊

Real question here for once....

When you're setting your dope for velocity will you use the cold barrel or 3 shot average? I've done both but have typically selected 3 shot and usually my deviation isn't too far off where out to my comfortable range it doesn't make a huge difference, but there is still a difference. Wondering what you do and maybe I need to change my thinking?

I use my 10 shot and dont want the sd to be very much. What ranges are we talking about here under 500 its picking fly shit out of chili start getting farther than little details start to matter more.

One step closer to the end.
Just don't see the need for the super large caliber unless your elephant or rhino hunting. Don't think they would be considered an investment as not a real market for them. Many just like collecting guns which is very cool. I get it, a lot of it is the big balls contest šŸ˜„
I have a buddy that has over 60 guns/pistols and admittedly only uses 5 of them.
what do the little balls boys shoot?

The only rifle I have cold bore data on is my FNA3G. I’m not even sure why I bother with that one to be completely honest. Other than I used it for F-class and fantasize about making cold bore shots on the ā€œRussiansā€ when red dawn comes down the pike.

Do you realize how far away from any Turnpike Toll Road we are here in ND? You're gonna have'ta hump a LONG ways east to find Red Dawn coming down the 'Pike.

With new bullet construction and a little understanding of terminal ballistics there is a reason people are going away from big 30,s and 7’s to the 6mm and 22 cal variants

I loaded up some Hornady 80gr ELD-X for my 22 Creedmoor today. I figured I would use it for Deer this year. They don't shoot as good as Bergers 85.5 gr bullets. The Bergers are a 10 shot ragged hole all day long. I have a 1 - 7.5 twist
