I've been a coach for a few years and I feel that there is some validity to both sides. Yes, you want to win the game, and yes blow outs happen. In my humble opinion, though, is that every level under the varsity level (although an argument could be made that the varsity level is as well) is a developmental level. You don't know who is going to hit a late growth spurt, or whose coordination will finally catch up to them later than other athletes. Fundamentals is something that is lacking more and more at a younger age. Some coaches feel that if the 5th grade stud can score every chance he or she gets, then the game plan should be to get it to that player every possession. The problem with that mentality is that in doing that, you are only developing one player. Very few times has a stud player single-handedly given a coach a state trophy in a team sport. I've always believed in running drills, running plays, and rotating the bench early and often. Sure, you may not win them all, but if you are developing ALL your players, there's a better chance at success. Even if it may cost you a win or two along the way. And if you have a blowout win using all your players, it won't be because you were playing certain players and not others. Just my opinion.
Lets just get a few things straight here: I am the "Coach" of this so called ALL STAR team and neither I or my assistant was at this tourney and neither were are kids.(There was only 6 kids from our team at this tourney not 8) There is roughly around 10 teams in Bismarck and for the most part most of these teams are school centered. These kids work there ASSES off!! We practice twice a week and try to do as many tourneys as possible thru out the year. On their freetime alot of these kids go to the gym and shoot around just for the love of the game. I am Sorry that you got a little BUTTHURT about the scores of the games but if you would know anything about 5th grade boys is that you can't just turn off there competitiveness and frankly I won't!! It is not our problem that when we sign up for these tourneys we get matched up against kids that have not practiced as much or kids that there parents won't take them to a gym and help them learn the game! And on another note I was told from the Coaches that they had told the boys that they had two make three passes before attempting to score and guess what everyone on the team scored every game!! So before you go venting about a 5th grade boys
basketball team get your story STRAIGHT!!

Loosing sucks especially getting blown out. If I were going to be pissed at someone I would point at the organizers for not making it a more competitive event.
