I am also a hunter and fisherman who hunts and fishes as a non-resident. Don't mind out-of-staters at all as long as they operated under similar codes of ethics. Have no use for any hunter or fisherman who thinks they can do whatever they want and just because they bought a higher priced license than us they have more rights.

If you or they are not acting in a manner where locals will freely visit with you, you're operating in a manner that brings a bad light to all outdoorsmen. Think about this for a minute, if you're hunting or fishing more than about a 50-100 miles from home, you're a non-resident. Act in a manner at all times that brings a positive message about hunters and fishermen.

Working for the feds is a real thrill. Most brag about where they came from. Makes you want to throw up. If it's so great why did they leave. One would think heaven was second place behind California.

Full Blooded Norwegian - all 4 of my grandparents emigrated from Norway (Hornindal & Hallingdal) in the 1890's thru Ellis Island and homesteaded in the Westhope area in western Bottineau County. Both homesteads are still in the family.

I do know one worked on the first railroad through North Dakota, then went back to somewhere close to Northfield, Minnesota and picked up grandma and homesteaded along the Sheyenne River. Late 1870's I believe. My parents didn't like to repeat themselves so my older brother knows that history much better than I do.

My grandpa on Dad's side came over in 1894 at age 17 with his older brother Ole. You had to be 21 to homestead, so they worked in northern Minnesota in the timber industry for 4 years and then went out to the Westhope area to homestead. After "proving up" their land (took 5 years by law) Grandpa bought Ole out and Ole moved up to western Saskatchewan/eastern Alberta (Medicine Hat/Swift Current area) where they had a sister and several nephews.

Then Grandpa went back to Norway to get his betrothed bride and return to America. She had decided in the 9 years that he was gone that she didn't want to leave Norway, but her 5 year younger sister Pernella had no such an aversion, so they married and came back to the Westhope area. She went by Nellie. True story.

I'm sure that there are many more stories out there just like this, but we are losing people every day that know these stories and sadly some stories are not being handed down.

My stepfathers grandpa came over from Finland. Yep, rode the train out to Ross (where it ended at the time) and he walked south until he found some land along the Missouri that he wanted to homestead. I guess he heard coyotes the first few nights he was in ND, so he slept in a tree to keep himself safely out of reach of the "wolves" as he built his sod home.

Never met old Hans Hansen, but I think I'd have liked him.
