Can't disagree or argue with anyone about how much sense it makes to drive vehicles for a long time. I have a problem in that I like to drive something new every 4 or 5 years. Helps the economy and keeps car dealers in business. Evidently I have a need for the new car smell occasionally.

Its like anything, if all you have ever done is date fat ugly Chic's you find a way to justify being satisfied, if your used to banging 9s, you might have had a fugly once, but now you are happy your Ferrari is in your garage and you justify being happy no matter what the cost.

Do yourself a favor and find yourself a used mid-90s Geo Prizm. You can NOT kill those vehicles.

I had one in college that was mom's before she upgraded. Finally got rid of it at 275K because the speedometer went out, the AC hadn't worked for years, and I couldn't get a key in the driver-side door. I was convinced it wasn't worth fixing, but I secretly just wanted a new vehicle.

Truth is, I bet I'd still have that forest-green beauty if I'd a sunk a couple hundo into it. It was a fantastic scouting vehicle.

Almost brings a tear to my eye... :(

I had a geo storm in high school. Room for 2 and one very, very small friend. I can't believe how quick that car was. Two head gaskets, two starters, and a propensity to short out, we sent it on it's way. I don't miss that car beside the 48 mpg.

Funny you mention this. My car now is a 2000 park ave and am looking at upgrading to a newer park ave or lucerne (06-08 had the 3.8)

Your buick is going to go another 100 easy and 200K with a little maintenance. My dad has a 99 park ave ultra with 250K on it. other than rust it runs good. get 32mpg cruising at 70.

When gas prices were at $4 i think a second vehicle penciled out. At current gas prices and for the foreseeable future i'm not sure they are worth it unless you maybe have a 3/4 truck to pull your camper and supplement that with a small car that gets excellent gas mileage for around town.

I had a motorcycle for the last 10 years that i rode to work for about 5 months out of the year. Got 40 mpg vs 10 in my truck around town. Bought it for $6,800 sold for $3,000. The money I saved on gas and maintenance on my truck in those 10 years pretty much paid for maintenance, insurance, depreciation on that bike. At most the bike probably cost me $1,000 for 10 years of riding.

We have three vehicles at home. My wife drives the Maxima, I drive the Olds Alero to work and the pickup gets used for fishing, hunting and menards trips. All of them are paid for. Pickup has 208K, Alero has 148K and the Maxima has 120K. All are still going strong, but it was a rough year for tires! All three vehicles needed tires this year!

My 06 lacrosse 3.8 has 205k on it. takes a half quart of synthetic in 5k miles. Just did the plugs, belt, alt, water pump, trans fluid. Should be good for another 100k. Will need brakes n rotors and rear struts in about 40k miles. gonna drive it till she dies.

do you have any corrosion on the rims? I have been reading that this is a common problem on the lucerne. Corrodeds to the point that the tires will start leaking from the poor seal to the rim. The 2007 lucerne I test drove the other day had rims that looked pretty shitty for only having 24000 mile.

sorry, just noticed you have a lacrosse and not the lucerne.

Might as well drive em till the doors fall off, dealers want to steal them if you try to trade and private sales, well people want to give you half of what you want and think they are doing you a favor. The way I set now I might buy a SUV when the wife quits for a little traveling. I have enough trucks I don't need to buy anything again.

Even at these lower prices it can still work its way out depending on how much you drive. I have a F150 that pretty much only comes out of the garage for hunting, fishing, or hauling. My daily is a 92 tempo with a 2.3 and gets mid thirties for mpg. between the gas savings it also really saves on wear and tear on my pickup. for me the purchase price plus tires has been recouped awhile ago. insurance is so cheap its almost a non factor,

I found a steal. I have an '11 silverado with 78k on it. Hardly drive except for hunting and fishing. Came across a 04 Buick lesabre 3800 motor etc. Had salvage title due to bad hail damage. But...only 80k miles. Runs like a caddy but not real pretty. Paid 3k for it. New battery and tires came with. Have offers to sell all the time. Just went to Fargo and back the other day. About 150 miles from my house one way. Got 33.8 miles per gal with cruise on 77. Haul my kids around everywhere. They call it the "granny" car. Do I need it...prob not. I have that pickup and wife has a sub too. But anytime you can find a 3800/with low miles you almost have to buy it. I did just put new rear shocks in it other than that she's golden!

Plus you had 10 yrs of cage free riding. I ride my bike to the office as much as possible, but the gas savings are not the real reason.
After ten yrs on the bike you gave it up?

Yeah gas savings wasn't my intent either when i bought my bike at 22. It was just a side benefit, but when you use it in place of your truck it is sort of a hobby that can pay for itself. I sold for several reasons, but not sure it will be my last bike.
